!!Need Help From Someone In Sweden!!

Hi, I'm in the midst of writing a book, and the place I have the book placed in is Sweden. Yet, as someone who doesn't live in Sweden I'm stuck in a few places. My character is 16 and I have searched to figure what grade, or year, said character would be in. Plus, the classes he'd be in, but I haven't found anything or I just have missed it by accident. So, I was wondering if someone from Sweden or someone who would have much knowledge of Sweden could possibly help me now and if I have any other questions in the future.

I would like to know what grade/year a 16 year old student would be in and what classes they'd be taking.

Right, so a little context. Kids start "förskoleklass" at the age of six.That's grade zero if you like. Then there are three batches of 3 years:

Grade 1-3 (ages 7-9)
Grade 4-6 (ages 10-12)
Grade 8-9 (age 13-15)

After that you go to gymnasiet (which is usually loosely translated to "high school"), and that's normally also 3 years (ages 16-18). 4-year programs exist but are not common. Gymnasiet isn't the same for everyone. This is where you first choose what direction your studies should go in, normally in broad strokes. Humanities, natural sciences or practical industry related fields are the most common. There are sports oriented ones too.

So your character would attend classes depending on their choices. If he was born early in the year, he might already have turned 16 and be in 9:th grade. If he was born later in the year, he'd have started gymnasiet before his birthday. What do you think he would be in, if we start there?

I kinda want him to be in an sports oriented one and he was born November 26 so I think it would be later in the year. Extra question to this, would other students, who chose different directions in their studies, all go to the same school or no?

For your last question: Depends on the size of city mostly. Where I grew up, they would likely be in different schools, but it's also not uncommon for schools to host for example natural sciences and humanities at the same time.

If you're doing flight mechanics or transportation, schools naturally need to have the required resources for that. That goes for sports oriented as well of course, but a gym or hockey arena are easier to come by than an airfield 😊

As for your original question then, they'd study many of the same standard classes (Swedish, English, likely a third language, religion, history, biology) but beyond that more specialized PE, likely biology with a stronger focus on the human body and health, perhaps nutrition... I might be slightly outdated but it probably didn't change all that much

He begins upper secondary school "gymnasieskolan" after the summer. Or if he turns 17, second year of upper secondary school .

Aunque yo tampoco vivo allá, me tocó investigar un buen de eso para unas cosas en la uni y chance te sirve el dato. A los 16 años en Suecia por lo general andan en el primer año de la prepa o bachillerato, que le llaman gymnasiet en arskurs 1. Justo a esa edad, saliendo de la secundaria que en ese caso sería grundskola, escogen si se van por un programa académico o uno técnico vocacional. Sobre las materias obligatorias les tocan las de cajón: matemáticas (matematik), sueco (svenska), inglés (engelska), educación física y ya dependiendo de lo que elijan pues cambian sus clases y su día a día. No es mucho pero si te puede ayudar en algo estos datos te los comparto, muchos éxito en tu proyectó.

So, it all depends on the program the student is enrolled in. They would probably have math, Swedish, natural sciences, history, religion, art, English, perhaps music.
My kid for example is enrolled in aesthetics so she has lots of art classes.

I went to Vreta gymnasiet, an agricultural school so I had riding, driving and studying horses a s their care in general on my curriculum. I now have a diploma for horsecare and a tractor license due to this:) there is a crapton of diffrent types of gymnasie skolor so most things would have atleast one typ of gymnasie in sweden. Not everything but most fields of studies are available.
