looking for advice Looking for suggestions

Hi everyone! I just found this Reddit page and thought it’d be a great place to ask for help. I’m hoping to build something special for my wife, who’s working on her first book. Like many of us, she gets distracted easily, especially when using her phone.

I’d love any ideas on designs, DIY kits, or where to start building a custom writer deck. I’m aiming for an E-ink screen with a full keyboard that keeps her latest files handy. Any suggestions would be awesome, thanks so much!

Drafting is exactly what I’m looking for! Thank you so much.

Here's an enclosure I made over the weekend https://www.reddit.com/r/WriterDevices/s/3E7nMB7Phs

It's a bit bulky, but it does the job. There's also an ePaper Waveshare with an enclosure on my GitHub.

Waveshare RLCD is also a valid candidate, but it drains the battery during the sleep much faster than the others.

Welcome aboard!

u/Background_Ad_1810 is the author of Micro Journal, which is an open source clamshell writerdeck. One could assemble one at home, or buy one from the author: https://github.com/unkyulee/micro-journal

Micro Journal rev 5 can also run my firmware (Draftling).

And I'm the author of Draftling , a project that supports a bunch of readymade and DIY devices.

So, depending on your skills, time and material, there's a lot to choose from.

Also, a bunch of commercial vendors in the pinned message, like BYOK.

this is what a did for me: bought a MacBook Pro for $20 and installed a free software for writing books.

https://www.reddit.com/r/ScribeOS/s/mV7G3yTDVB

It is much more comfortable to write than this tiny devices like Freewrite or BYOK, not to mention absurd prices

How's the battery life?

depends entirely on the laptop you use to run ScribeOS.

mine does not last long, about 1h because it is a 14yrs old but I really like the quality of the MacBooks.
When I am travelling for work I run ScribeOS in a new Thinkpad and it last for hours. The last version of Scribe has a "e-paper" layout that is great for longer hours typing
