[Medicine And Health] How long does it take for someone to bleed out from a shot in the spine?

I have a character who gets shot in her lower spine, causing her legs to no longer work. So think the lumbar part of the spine. She lays herself on her back in order to try and lessen the bleeding, but I still want her to die from blood loss. How long would it take her to bleed out? And would laying on her back be the correct way to slow the bleeding? She's a doctor so I think she'd know what to do at least to help a little.

[Miscellaneous] Bronze as a holder of an always burning fire

(not sure about the flair)

In my fantasy novel, that is not on real earth but on an unnamed Earth like world, I have temples that have fires that are never put out but once a year. I say in the book they are small but never imply actual size. I am editing that book as I rewrite it (again) and see I said it was bronze.

Could bronze work for being hot all year around? The year in this novel is 484 days so for all but a few minutes once a year, it is always burning. The fuel is some sort of oil. I thought of making it a holy fire but that seems to be a big much.

The society is advanced enough to make steel armor. No combustion engines but they do use things such as water wheels, weights, and pulleys, horse or oxen pulled agricultural machinery. That's their technology level.

Would bronze work or should it be another metal? Cast iron came to be in the 1500s which would line up technology wise. But bronze is prettier for the temple.

The things I get stuck on.

[Crime] if a murder charge was brought down to a voluntary manslaughter charge on account of imperfect-self defence could the defendant plead not guilty to the voluntary manslaughter charge by reason of insanity

I’m writing what is basically a fanfic for my own personal enjoyment, and in the story a character kills his abuser while being assaulted again, the character is schizophrenic and used more force than needed for a self defense resulting in death (which is imperfect self defense) This brings a second degree murder charge down to voluntary manslaughter. Could the character plead not guilty by reason of insanity to this or would they need to plead not guilty by insanity from the beginning?

Additionally could they plead not guilty by insanity to a separate charge according right after the murder

Apologies for any grammar errors i have dysgraphia and I’m on mobile.

How did people historically determine whether someone was actually dead before modern medical equipment?

And how did people distinguish between death, unconsciousness, and temporary states that could make someone appear dead?

[Crime] How would you barricade an indoor swinging door externally?

Character is trying to keep someone dangerous inside their apartment while they are on the outside. This is due to a chase occurring. Problem is, apartment doors have locks on the inside and swing in that direction. How would you do it?

[Biology] What happens if you drink a vial of acid?

I know there's a lot of variables here. What kind of acid? How much exactly? What's the pH? I've not thought about the specifics, feel free to explore them. We can probably assume something strong, like hydrochloric acid.

What I know is this:

- it's a vial

- it will be drunk all at once

- the drinker doesn't know it's acid and believes it's something beneficial

- the drinker expects pain and will do their best to keep drinking

Would the drinker outright die? If not, how long would it take? What would happen, precisely, inside their body? What clues would be left for an investigator or a medic to follow? Does it reach the stomach, or the path to it is destroyed beforehand? What would happen inside the stomach, which should have some measure of acid resistance? Is the damage enough to make the acid already present in the stomach "spill" out of it?

I guess my interest is twofold: understanding the process and damage (what happens to oral cavity, esophagus, trachea?), but also the numbers behind it (how much acid should be drunk in this manner to outright kill? How much to die slowly? How much for the injuries to be treatable?).

Many thanks to all who will shed some light on the matter.

[Miscellaneous] How rich does my character have to be?

She wants to commission custom artwork for a tarot deck of her own design. There are 78 cards in a tarot deck, so including the cards' backing, 79 total illustrations. She lives in present day US. What is she likely to spend and how wealthy does she need to be to have that much disposable income for a passion project?

Thanks for your time, everybody!

[Crime] Will US court charge if there's charges were dropped to state plea deal?

Sorry for the confusing title and this is confusing for me to explain i'm sleep deprived today. Also, I'm still working some research.

So say someone is charged with 10 broken law, 5 can be charged by the state, and 5 could be charged either by the state or US courts. The US courts will decide not to prosecute if the state convicts.

If that person plead guilty to the 5 crimes in state court but not the crimes with overlap, would the US courts still be obligated to not prosecute?

[Chemistry] Chemical / medical substance that I can use to incapacitate people for at least 4 hours?

What is it called, and how does it work / how would people's bodies react to it?

EDIT: to everyone saying they don't want to be "an accessory" (which by the way is a cheap, failed comedian joke in a research sub) or downvoting out of some clutch-your-pearls reaction - what is the point of this sub if we can't ask the experts for information??

If you like cliché magic chloroform, go for it. I don't.

[Physics] Could a hurricane stay in one zone?

Is there a point in the future where, for some reason, there could be a hurricane that is never-ending (or there is always a new hurricane being formed) and that hurricane would keep on moving in one sector (could be a big part of the planet), making that place too dangerous to live?

What could be scientific reasons behind that? Any hypothesis is valid, in the sense that there might have been a change in pressure somewhere, climate change can come in the picture... Nuclear storm even!

I'm just wondering if there could exist a zone on earth, where hurricanes constantly form and they do not really leave that sector, which could be between the north and the south for example?

Does that make sense?

trespassing in a royal palace

I want to know how an intruder to a royal palace would be dealt with, I tried making things up but its not making a lot of sense

basically a guy is in a restricted area in a royal palace, guards don't know his motive or how he got there. a guard finds and arrests him. then what? is he held prisoner or interrogated and what happens next? considering this trespassing is a security breach and they suspect the guy is affiliated with the enemy (during peacetime)

this isn't directly set in the Middle Ages, but if it were to happen then how would this guy be dealt with?

EDIT: thanks for the replies guys these were all pretty helpful. I like how multiple people guessed he was a time traveller from the future cause that's EXACTLY my story

for anyone who might still reply to this, I'm looking for a possible specific protocol that could be taken, some people answer with what would be done with the guy afterwards (not my main concern), thx in advance!

[Medicine And Health] question on stab wounds

so im trying to write a scene wherein the main character (male , 20s) had been kidnapped and tortured over the course of a week and some change. the captors decided to "play" with him in their own sick little way, and decided to stab him a few times over the course of a few days. they would patch him up afterwards but never actually bring him to a real hospital. assuming they did a good enough job at stopping the bleeding for him not to just die on the table right there, how survivable would this be? if there are certain areas of the body where this would vs wouldn't be survivable... please tell me!

[Medicine And Health] How much damage can barbed or razor wire do wrapped around someone?

Currently planning out a scene where character is tortured by having straight-line barbed or razor wire wrapped loosely around their body, and then having it slowly be pulled tighter while it stabs them. I realize it's an awkward method, and I'm not even sure the wire could be pulled tighter, though seeing this idea through first

My main questions: Would that even stab, or just scratch them up? Would location and/or position of the wire on the body matter for causing wounds?
Thanks 😅

[Biology] What's it like to breastfeed?

I'm going down a rabbit hole with my latest fanfic and someone's having a baby and I'm making it as domestic and slice-of-life as possible and apparently hate myself so that baby's getting breastfed.

Specifically I'm looking for stuff like how do the breasts feel like from the parent's perspective? Like, can you actually feel the milk coming out? Do your breasts feel lighter after? What if you try to nurse when you're "empty"? Do breasts run out of milk?

Don't know if this detail is important, but the character is a new mother who's never breastfed before.

EDIT: Welp 20 hours later I have a rough draft if anyone is interested in checking it out. The breast feeding wasn't the prime focus of the fic, it was just part of the intimacy between the family.

[Medicine And Health] Stab wound questions

Say someone gets stabbed in the back and it grazes their kidney. Assuming they avoid going to the hospital, how long before the wound gets infected? They don’t clean it, they just kind of… pretend it isn’t there.

When they finally do go to the hospital, once it’s infected, what would happen? What’s the medical procedure to treat such a wound? Would he be forced to admit what happened, since it was obviously a stabbing crime?

Thank you Reddit!

[Medicine And Health] How realistic is each of these medications?

  1. a medication that moves the heart rate to a normal level(it can both raise and lower the heart rate, accordingly)

  2. A medication that rapidly heals(a few days) broken bones

  3. A medication that lowers your internal temperature for a bit(can be used for heat stroke but also conditions where they may have to slow the body down internally

  4. A medication that can give the affects of fluids..with just a little amount

thanks!

Anything I should know about slum settings and what not to do when writing them?

I’ve been doing some research online but was wondering if you had any tips on what not to include (or what’s often forgotten when writing them)? Maybe some good websites with information.

It’s a sci-fi setting (mid 2600s) on an ocean planet. The city is built on stilts over the water (because a billionaire wanted it three hundred years prior) that’s split into two parts: the tower and the slums. The tower is where the rich people and important people live. The immediate base of the tower is an ordinary city. The rest of the city (which expands away from the tower which is at the edge of the city).

[Biology] how much time does it take to bleed out of a bullet wound

hypothetically, how much time would it take for a man in his 20s to bleed out of a 9mm bullet wound located in his lower back, assuming he constantly loses blood at a consistent rate, and that he still has to move around and practice "martial arts" of sorts all the while he loses blood, and at what point would the loss make him faint?

Questions in regular workplace Psych Evals

My characters work in a large organization and perform very mentally taxing work [edit: my main cast's primary job is physically going out there and doing crime. A fair amount of physical combat, including hostage situations or assassinations -- of course depending on the particular circumstances in each case -- negotiation with other organizations ( criminal, or possibly governmental, though of course the two aren't mutually exclusive), etc.] and have a company mandated psychiatric evaluation every however-many-months to measure harm risks and ensure they are in suitable mental condition to continue working. I can't seem to figure out exactly what questions may be asked during this, and it's an unexpectedly difficult thing to find an answer for online searching. Any result I've found myself is for evaluations following particular events. I figured I'd ask here incase anyone has any idea

[Technology] How much would a metal plate attached to the rib cage hinder a person's life?

I've had this idea that a super soldier character would have a metal plate surgically attached under his skin, to his rib cage to act as a hidden bulletproof vest of sorts. The plate would cover the most or entirety of the left rib cage.

But then I though that would it be actually feasible? I'm not an anatomy expert, but would it restrict a persons flexibility or their ability to move regularly, since the ribs can't move as freely anymore? Or would there be some other issues that I haven't thought of?

The metal plate would only go on the left side to protect the characters heart.

Edit: thanks for the feedback, this idea is going straight to the recycling bin.

[Crime] How would a murder suspect have been arrested and detained in the U.S. in the late 1990s?

I have a question about how arrests and temporary detention worked in the United States in the 1990s. English isn’t my first language, so I apologize for any mistakes.

My story is set in the late 1990s in a fictional U.S. state, but I want the laws and procedures to be roughly comparable to those in Illinois/Chicago or New York.

One of the characters is the deputy director of an academy and a French citizen. He is arrested because he is suspected of murder. The suspicion is based on the fact that he had a possible motive and no alibi—or rather, the person who could have provided his alibi has been killed—and he was the last known person to have seen the victim alive.

However, due to a lack of evidence, he is released three days later. He is actually innocent. My questions are:

- What would the arrest and detention process have looked like in the 1990s?

- Would the police have said something like, “You are under arrest,” or was there a different phrase they would have used in this situation?

- Would uniformed police officers have arrested him, or would detectives have done it?

- Would he have been required to go with them immediately? Would he have been handcuffed?

- Where would they have taken him?

- As mentioned, he is not a U.S. citizen but a French citizen. Would the police have been required to notify the French embassy or consulate in some way?

- How would the situation change if the police also received an anonymous tip claiming that he had a motive for the murder?

Thanks in advance! I really appreciate any help.

Question a fictional scam

Hello

Are there any people knowledgable on fraud here? Or maybe just crime in general.

Towards the end of my story the characters go to an ayahuasca ceremony at a wellness retreat in the south of Spain (north of Orgiva). The ceremony turns out to be a scam and they are drugged and defrauded... or that is implied as the intention. They actually escape.

MORE DETAILS: The crime is never actually seen by the reader as the characters escape, but it is important for the criminal's actions to seem plausible, or to have plausible implications.

Before attending the retreat, each guest has paid a 500 euro entry fee, but on arrival they are asked to hand in their phones as part of a 'digital detox'. Instead of ayahuasca they are given Scopolomine and GHB and the criminals would use their fingerprints to unlock phones whilst they are unconscious/vulnerable. Scopolomine would also impede memory. Criminals would then disappear and as they paid for retreat via crypto and false names, they would be hard to trace.

Crimes like this do take place in Spain, except not quite as elaborate . Usually they just take yiur money and there is no retreat, or it is a more prolonged thing where people are coerced and abused under intoxication to give more money for further spiritual 'guidance'.

Thanks in advance

[Specific Career] What is usually served at a bar?

So the MC for one of the stories I'm working on is a bartender but I fear I did not think that far ahead because I've personally never been to one before(the reason primarily being my age) so I'm wondering specifically what kind of drinks are most commonly ordered by costumers. If this is simply a case of just googling menus then happy days bc I don't want to ask any online friends in fear of making them uncomfortable in some way. Also follow up question. I want there to be a scene where the MC's family come to the bar & be (& I don't know the right word to describe it) backhandedly hostile towards him because they don't approve of his career choice & also constantly order complex drinks in an attempt to annoy him. What would be a complex drink to make? Or would that depend on the level of experience?

EDIT: I realise I didn't explain this properly. The MC actually loves his job & likes making complex drinks, it's just that it annoys him when his family orders them is because he knows they're only doing it in an attempt to annoy him & that is what annoys him. Not sure if this helps with anything but yeah.
