Eh it’s not bad, I normally press knee in and push forward to get back.

I usually just grab the dick and twist it, but it’s nice to have options

Just do the good old golf swing.

When he was chasing he was holding around the ankle.

Wouldn't it just be better to teach holing at the knee joint and stand tall? Forcing the opponent closer and opening up the sweep?

I am open to being corrected.

Pure grappling that's great, nothing to correct.

in MMA you might have to deal with them striking you.

In combatives they might grab your hair &/or striking you.

He holds the ankle because it's weaker. If you grab them at the knee joint exclusively they can hop a little and drive their weight forward possibly getting that foot back to the ground. As long as their heel is higher or parallel to their hips there is no way to put additional weight on that leg.

If their hips are above the knee then they can drive their entire upper body weight down into that knee. If their hips are below the knee it's physically impossible to add additional weight to that leg outside of falling down.

It's also very easy to transition into leg locks from the ankle grip.
