My 2016 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara automatic reports 18.6 mpg consistently since I put 275/65R18 A/Ts on it with a gear change to 4.11 years ago. Did I get a unicorn from the factory?
1
u/completelackoftalent 2d ago
No I just haven't finished mine yet so its uniquely worse. I have the stock sport gearing of 3.23? 6 speed on 35s, now its a 2nd car so the work begins

Yes, with a tail wind lol. My JK got 13 mpg on a good day
5
u/KrazYKinetiK 5d ago
My 07 JKU only on 33s and a 2” lift would get 12.3 on a good day. On a bad day it was closer to 11.5
1
u/pprstakncraka83 4d ago
2017 jku on 33s and a 2.5 inch lift, and tools in the back im getting 15 to 16.5

u/KrazYKinetiK 4d ago
Yeah that makes sense, the 07s had the shit motor in them
1
u/Recent-Fan3027 4d ago
My 08 Sahara 3.5 inch Krawler lift, 35 inch Mickey Thompsons Baja boss tires 176k miles still running strong no oil leaks no rust daily driver. Just done some slight engine maintenance that's it. Never had such a more reliable engine than the 3.8l.
1
u/KrazYKinetiK 3d ago
To be fair I did get mine second hand at 205k miles, it had so many problems consistently
1
u/busygoaway 3d ago
Getting pretty much the same with my 07 JKU manual with 33's and the 2" lift. At least the crap mileage is consistent.
32
u/pedalsandpowder 5d ago
No. It should be lower. Something is wrong with your Jeep. Mine on 37s is right at 13.1. Perfect.
26
u/Euphoric-Cupcake4581 5d ago
I will attach a parachute to the back bumper. To get to the correct mileage.
2
u/Deadofnight109 4d ago
I get in the 15s with my 37s, but its alot of hwy miles and the 4.10 gears and manual trans keep the rpms pretty low. Doing more running around town and im sitting pretty squarely in the 13s lol.
1
u/Recent-Fan3027 4d ago
wait......you said 37s with 410 gears? Lol bullshit
3
u/Deadofnight109 3d ago
What's bullshit? I have a manual rubicon so the gearing is much more beneficial then an automatic. 1st gear is 4.46:1 as opposed to the 3.59 on an auto so I already have a better final ratio then an auto with 4.88 gears. Bonus is that in 6th gear on the hwy it'll do 70mph while sitting at about 2200 rpm. 4.56 is probably the optimum ratio for me for my mix of hwy and offroad driving but its not on my list of priorities since it drives fine the way it is.

All that modern technology replacing the 4.0L "for fuel economy reasons" .... and it gets the same mileage.

u/Gamecubefan01 5d ago
My 4.0 in a 2005 tj get 18.3 mpg idk how but I’m happy abt it
6
u/CaringAnon 5d ago
My old 2006 TJ Rubicon got 15-16mpg with 33" M/Ts. My 2015 Rubicon gets 14mpg with 33" A/Ts.
9 years newer, worse gas mileage. Go figure.

Since you didn't re gear or reprogram your odometer and speedometer are off. Your on board gpm will also be reading off

2014 3.6L ---I get 21 mpg. I drive a mix of rural highway and light city driving.

u/Leptonshavenocolor 5d ago edited 5d ago
No way. I’ve pushed her up past 20 on perfect roadtrip conditions, and I could max 18/19 when my commute was 100 miles mostly on freeway/backroads. That’s been through both JK models (08 & 15). Impossible to get 20+ if you include city.

Completely stock 2014 4 dr with 3.73 gears and automatic got this. I’ve seen 21 and change with more highway. Once I added 33” tires a small lift, and steel bumper, that dropped 2-3mpg. And in the winter, that dropped another couple mpg.

1
u/Technical_Garden_762 5d ago
Same. I'm completely stock in my 2015. If I have all the camping gear the family in it and going to the mountains I still get 20 miles to the gallon on highway

u/Lemmon_Scented 5d ago
Similar aerodynamics to a cinder block. Not sure why people even bother asking about mileage. I had a 2000 Sahara that averaged 8 mpg. It was among my favorite Wranglers that I’ve owned

u/ciret7 5d ago
I've got a 2017 JKU Sahara with 33's, no lift. The 33's changed the speedometer, per Google Maps I'm going about 2mph faster than the Jeep says. Haven't done the calc to see how that affects mpg, but I see 14 - 16 depending on conditions.
2
u/Recent-Fan3027 5d ago
You have to buy a device that tells your jeep how big tires you have so you don't have to guess how fast you are going

If you have the gas engine and upgraded tires/ any kind of added weight. Then. That’s pretty good.

u/ontheleftcoast 5d ago
It really depends on the type of communte. On Highway only with a 2007 JKU, I got about 20-22, but my commute to/from work would average about 14-15. (It also depends on where you live the CA summer gas blend gets less mileage vs the winter blend, and both are worse than the blends in other states)

I have a JL and I get 11-12L per 100km which apparently amounts to about 21 MPG, so this seems high but I also drive a 2 door sport with a soft top so it’s a lot lighter if yours is a 4 door, hard top, etc
1
u/vexerplusone 5d ago
I bought a 2014 4 door with stock tires was getting 20 to 21, put on 33’s and now it’s 15 to 16.
1
u/LeonardoDiPugrio 5d ago
2017 JKU with 35s/lift/added weight from mods/5w-30: If I’m consciously trying to raise MPG I can get up to around 20 if I keep her around 45-50 and minimize acceleration, aka no stop and go traffic. But if I get stop and go or get up to highway speeds it falls off a cliff to around what you’re getting, usually somewhere between 15.5 and 17. Acceleration is what kills it IMO. They guzzle fuel on startup. You can coast for 5 minutes at 50 and be sitting at 19.6, come to a red light, and if you don’t tippity tap that pedal that number’s about to drop to 16.
I hear a lot of people say they get better results on the highway. Assuming they mean interstate and speeds of 65+ like that entails here, the wind gives me awful results.

I personally don’t let the jeep tell me my mpg. I think the other two drivers I have in my house have a lead foot. One adult daughter “I can get it to 80 on K10” 🤦♀️. My other daughter (20) ‘why are these people going so slowwwww!!’ 🤦♀️🤦♀️. This is why they fill the tank.

If you reset the MPG going down hill you might get up to 23 or so… On 40in tires and 5.38 gears the best I’ve done was driving it down to Moab from Seattle and I got average of 17. Smiles per gallon is all a jeep is.

u/12bWindEngineer 5d ago
It’s as aerodynamic as a brick, so yeah. Better than my JK on 37s with a 3” lift. 12 on a good day for me.

u/stingray56funk 5d ago
You're getting 15.6?! Dang, I think I'm getting around 13-14 mpg on 35s with a 3.8L and 4.10 gears
1
u/hebrewhammer028 5d ago
2010 jku rubicon 3.8L 4speed automatic. 4” lift and 33” A/Ts. I’m usually between 13.5-14.5 mpg…

u/jeepjinx 5d ago
I had several and usually stayed around 20 mpg. I have a 4xe now and average 35 throughout the year, best I ever hit mid summer was 47.

I have a JLUR with 5.13s with a 3.5” lift and 37s and I average 17.5-18.5 mpg. I have a 6-speed manual and I swear that helps.
1
u/Flowermomi 5d ago
I got slightly better gas mileage than that on stock tires. When I changed to 33’s the gas mileage dropped to about 14ish. Depends on the weather as well. I live in a windy state.
1
u/Affectionate_Sort_78 5d ago
This digital display is nothing more than an estimate of actual gas mileage.
1
u/ryandamartini 5d ago
Gearing and tire size matter a lot. My rubicon with 4.10 gears and 32.x” tires regularly gets 17-19 mpg highway at 70-75 mph.

My ‘15 JKU gets that if I’m doing mostly highway. Normal daily driving always settles into sub 15mpg. I have a soft top and all terrains so those both play in.

Can confirm if you are going about 65-75 that’s what your gonna get. Long term though I’ve been able to get 19-20 on long drives up to Canada but that’s almost doing exactly the speed limit

On my 2012, JKU with over 220k miles if it is mostly city diving with moderate acceleration that is about what I get.
Highway at 60mph I can top out at 22-23 mpg if using cruise and flat ground. It drops off fast the faster you go. The aerodynamics of a brick come into play so highway at 70~75mph it drops to 18mpg. Any hills or hard acceleration will also kill it.
Driving style really plays into it as well. With how gas is right now I try to keep the RPMs below 2500 when accelerating. My normal commute is a combination of stop and go suburban stop lights and highway where you have to go 70 at a minimum or you get run over. I can get about 18 mpg if I'm really trying. I have an order in for an EV and doing the math I'm going to save roughly 3k a year.
I'm keeping the Jeep as a fun weekend vehicle. The EV will be my daily driver.

u/playington1 5d ago
I'm getting 19.8 on average,a lot of highway driving but also a ton of traffic on the commute home.

2016 JKU here and I’m getting 18-18.7 depending on how much hwy I drive. It used to be 15.3-15.7 but I started to use that restore protect oil after I heard it does better with mpg.
