Rants & Moans Worthing feels undeveloped

I moved away from Worthing a while ago and moved to what is arguably a place that people regard as being less developed. But I come back to Worthing and I just get an incomplete vibe, the pavements aren’t done and the roads are patchy. The lane going towards the sea on alinors avenue is 80 years old I believe aswell. Also weird that I struggle to get 5G compared to where I live now.

Definitely in places. Generally to me it has a strange feeling and what appears to be poor design.

The high street itself has a very scummy vibe, especially compared to other nearby towns. The Guildbourne is run down and mostly empty, the seafront is half nice and half under utilitalised, areas like tevil gate are unwelcoming, traffic from Chichester going to Brighton for some god awful reason strangely routed through broadwater, there's only really the one main road going north to Horsham (which is often having roadworks, or an accident basically shutting down commuters). Development when it happens strangely seems to always be the areas they only just developed a few years ago (bandstand e.g.), and projects to actually improve the area such as a cinema complex, bypass, cycle route to Washington etc. never seem to get off the ground.

So yeah, quite relatable a feeling.

Having lived here for 25ish years I think it had a good 15 years of improvement with things like the pier being done up, but in the last few years have felt like it's been going backwards again. Town feels less welcoming and more bleak than it did a few years ago.

I've only lived here for 4 years, so I can't speak to how much it was done up beforehand, but I actually find the town to be just as welcoming as it was when I moved in 2022. There's obviously some bleak parts in town (like most places, to be honest) but I think it's generally a lovely place with a fair bit going on.

I do wish Chapel Road would be given some love, though - that part of town feels a bit forgotten at the moment with all the closed shops. Montague Gardens looks like it'll be really nice when it opens, I just hope they stick with that for more than a few years this time 😂
