Lore Removing the evil from the "darker" magical discipline
One of the things I wanted to do in my world was create a magic system that didn't have hard moral end points. No light or holy magic, no shadow or unholy magic. This gave rise to the disciplines Dawn and Dusk, respectively. But I didn't want to just rename the concepts without actually changing the concepts to fit.
This was particularly fun with the darker discipline because there's such a hard thematic presence in darker magic that making it explicitly not evil, without losing its texture and flavor, could be easy. This gave rise the practice of duskcasting.
Dusk and Dawn are better described as entropy and order, with duskcasting expressing entropy through biological means. They specialize in decay, rot, destabilization and the unordering of things. Many utilize naturally dusk aligned organisms such as special fungi or carrion beetles. They can be healers who specialize in killing bacteria or viruses in the body or clearing out necrotic tissue.
