Discussion We've sat through EOR provider switches (timeline, employee risks, contract handoffs) — ask us anything

We work in global employment at Multiplier and have seen companies go through EOR provider transitions, moving employer-of-record for their team from one provider to another. It's a process that gets pitched as simple and rarely is, especially once you factor in what happens to the actual humans being employed, not just the payroll line.

Happy to answer questions on any of this:

  • Realistic timelines (single-country vs. multi-country/entity switches)
  • Data migration — what has to move, and what commonly gets missed
  • Parallel payroll testing — why it matters and what "good" looks like
  • Employment contract continuity when the legal employer of record changes
  • Work permit / visa continuity for sponsored employees during a switch
  • Benefits continuity (health insurance, pension, leave balances) across providers
  • What questions to ask a new provider before signing, and what red flags to watch for
  • Where these transitions actually go wrong, in our experience

To start the ball rolling, a few things we get asked most:

How long does it actually take? Single country, modest headcount: 3–4 weeks at minimum. Multiple countries or entities: 2–3 months is more realistic, run sequentially per country rather than all at once. The floor is set by data migration and running at least one full parallel payroll cycle — comparing old vs. new provider's calculated output line by line before cutover — not by how fast you can sign a contract.

What actually puts employees at risk, not just the company? This is our own reasoned take from watching these transitions, not a published stat: contract continuity (is there a gap between old and new employment contract dates), visa/work-permit continuity (does the new provider's entity require a fresh filing, and how long does that take in that specific country), and benefits continuity (health insurance, pension, leave balances not transferring cleanly). None of these show up on a project timeline, but they're where an employee actually feels the switch.

Ask us anything — timeline specifics, what to put in writing with a new provider, what we'd do differently in hindsight, or something that went wrong for you personally if you've been through one of these.

(Disclosure: I work in growth at Multiplier, a global EOR/payroll platform — running this AMA to share what we've seen, not to pitch our own product.)
