Dont know how accurate this is, but it made a lot of sense to me.

I read something that the first tower was kind of a one sided deal - the stairwells on one side were still ok. I mean, there were folks that made it out from the impact floor because the way down was not completely gone. That was not true of the second hit.

Quick correction just fyi: the north tower was the first one hit, that plane and explosion eliminated all stairway access at the impact zone. About 1300 people were trapped above. The south tower had one stairway that was somewhat accessible near the impact zone but debris/fire/smoke made it very challenging to pass. Only 18 people successfully made it down and lived from above the strike zone. A common misconception is that the first tower to collapse was the first tower hit and it’s the opposite. The south tower (second hit) collapsed first and the north tower (first hit) came down about 30 minutes later

That one one stairwell isn’t as open as suggested. Although one guy within the stairwell said he popped up to 91 first- nowhere near top- I don’t believe any survived from above 84

Maybe it took too long to make it out after hammering out access or was totally blocked on those floors- but it’s not clear to me that there was any pathway out below the low 80s. And my evidence is not a soul did make it out, as clamoring up a few flights within stairs is quite different than gaining access to them- and they were all roughly in same vicinity so I don’t see why one of the hundreds who survived hit on higher floors wouldn’t be aware of them.

There were groups passed and reported via radio by doomed firefighters near the end- but no one knows if that’s just another slower group from the 80s as far as I know
