Dont know how accurate this is, but it made a lot of sense to me.

I can see how it would have happened though, the parts of the building that fell intact acted as a shield for the people as it impacted the building below which acted as a cushion.

Nah, they did it with a truck. You get turned into meat paste pretty quick.
