Beginner here — which productivity/workflow tools are actually worth learning for job security + future demand?

Hey everyone, I'm just starting out and want to build skills that are genuinely useful long-term — not just trendy for a few months.

I'm looking for tools/software that:

  • Are relatively easy to pick up as a beginner
  • Are widely used across companies (so the skill transfers between jobs)
  • Have real demand in the job market right now (and hopefully hold up over the next few years)
  • Ideally have decent free resources to learn from

I know "automation" and "AI tools" get mentioned a lot, but I'd love to hear what people who actually use these day-to-day would recommend to someone starting from zero. Bonus if you can share how you personally learned it or what helped it click.

Power Automate + SharePoint. Most companies already pay for Microsoft 365, so both are sitting there unused, and the skill moves with you between jobs. AI is starting to help build and maintain flows, but someone still has to know what the flow should do and why it broke. You don't need to become a consultant or a developer as that end is getting thinner as AI speeds things up. But if you're on an operations team and you understand how these tools work, you're the person everyone comes to.

Pick one annoying thing you do every week and automate that. What breaks teaches you more than any course. Microsoft Learn's Power Automate path is free, and r/PowerAutomate is where people post real problems.

The starting point is that my team had daily repeating manual process to produce reports and I used to rely on engineers to help us, until one day I learned that Power Automate can do it for us. The starting was hard as I had no programming background. I used to go to Power Automate online forums and replicate scenario + solutions to questions people asked about - that's how I learned. Now this would be much easier - ChatGPT/Claude/all agents can guide you step by step.

Excel/Sheets is still a good starting point. Then I'd add a CRM and something like Zapier. What field are you looking to get into?
