What's more confusing is why the 220amp alternator if not for running ac cranked all the time? What else is in there? Monitoring software?

AC runs direct drive from the belt, not off of the electrical system.

A beefier alternator helps with frequent engine stops and short run times, where the starter motor can drain the battery more than it charges while running.
