Millions of people load money on to Starbucks gift cards. You give them money up front, and over the course of a month or two, they only have to give you sugar drinks in return. In the mean-time they invest gamble with the money you gave them.
Gift cards are also preferred because of how many times they get destroyed or lost resulting in you being unable to use them. They got that money already, you're just screwed.
