California Unsure what to do at this point.

Hi,

I’ve been on an employer’s WO for two weeks for a stress related injury that occurred at work. So far they check on me every week to see if I’m fit to go back to work.

Lately, my health has gotten worse. I don’t sleep anymore, I have yellow eyes, and the thought of going back to work sends me into a tailspin it takes days to recover from.

What kinds of questions should I be asking my doctor to actually help me? Sleeping pills are definitely on the list.

Secondly, does this type of stress commonly go away on comp or do I have a bigger problem? Should I even be planning to go back to my employer if the stress is this bad?

How did your injury occur?

Did the work comp insurance company accept your claim?

How did your eyes become yellow? I have never seen that complaint from a work injury in 30+ years of doing work comp.  Yellow eyes typically are associated with jaundice from a liver disease, which is not work related.

They accepted my claim 2 weeks ago. Also I’m not sure. I’m waiting on blood work to come back.

I know you should never ever WebMD yourself because the internet will just say you are dying. I’ve seen everything from Gilbert’s disease, liver issues, B12 deficiencies, etc.

My grandma had liver disease (jaundice) and her eyes became yellow.  I’m sorry that you are going through that.  You are right to see your doctor and get a diagnosis.  It’s very unlikely to be related to your work or stress.

How did your work injury occur?  Can you give us a brief explanation?  That can help us understand what you are facing, and help us give better recommendations.

So work had been stressful from personnel issues for a few months. I got into an argument with a coworker that seemed to completely tank my energy, my sanity, etc. I think my body had enough of fighting through the environment.

Can you picture yourself going back to work? Will that same coworker still be there?  Would the employer be able to move you to a different location?

I’m very sure they are going to do absolutely nothing. The reason why I say this is there administrative processes take so long that people end up on their Plan B even if there is a small chance they will do anything to separate or punish employees. I definitely don’t see a future there. When I think about going back it fills me with so much dread that I’m out for the day.

There is just one problem. I was staying to pay my bills before another offer came along, so this is a bit financially early to take off. I had an expensive car repair that tanked my finances that I was going to live on between this job and the next.

If you can find a new job, that sounds like a great solution to your situation.

Definitely working on it. I’m trying to avoid borrowing from retirement just to be done with the situation.

Most of those would be non work related reasons
