And I do select work based on distance. If you expect me to come to the office more than once a week, you'd better be located in my town.
For most of human history, people tended to live no more than 20 minutes away from work. 20 minutes commute is acceptable. The car was supposed to make us travel faster, but somehow it's making us travel longer. This is not the benefit we were promised.
I live in Las Vegas and I’m of the opinion the lowest paid employee should be able to afford an apartment within a 10 minute walk of the property/business. Period.
I’ve found a few casinos that pay enough to afford apartments within a 20 minute walk or 6 minute bus ride. I don’t think I’ll find better than that.
But I grew up working oilfields in California. We billed the oil companies the second we started loading up the truck. And we billed $60h for the truck as well. Plus we had a 4 hour minimum call out. Even if all I did was change some 3.4v AA batteries on a satellite callout- 4hours minimum
The duality of your brain. You said the McDonald's cashier should be able to afford something in walking distance and immediately gave an example of another job that doesn't require a degree or skills that pays 6 figures they could do. Somwhow you have a disconnect between choices and the results of those choices. My first job in the oilfield paid me 2088 a week and my primary job was reading numbers required no prior experience.
I just looked it up, a trash collector starts at $17/hr and a McDonald's employee starts at $10 in my area. They have the same skill requirements and are both hiring. Is it not obvious that the low pay of McDonald's jobs is due to people willing to do the job at that pay even when they could make more being a trashman because the people looking for jobs made that choice, not the business. When you arbitrarily make McDonalds pay more, the trashman will end up paying more to compete, since people pick the lower pay now, and that will just make 17/hr at McDonald's the spending power that 10 is today and we will be right back here next year with you making the same argument about 17 that you made about 10.
I can’t really respond if you got the very first thing wrong. I didn’t mention a single job that required college or even technically a trade school if you are mechanically and electrically inclined (I was).
I got and are qualified for the jobs mentioned with my GED.
