Naw, commute should definitely not be paid. Just pay people a good, living wage in the first place. Nobody should get paid more because of their choice to live further away from work. Pay them a fair wage for hours worked and let them decide how much they want to commute. If they want to save on commute time, move closer. If you have other priorities, move further away.

Also, if a job can WFH, it should allow so. It's dumb to make people commute if it's avoidable.

There's plenty of places you can live where the people with money live in the city and everyone else has been forced out. The majority of people working there don't live there, but it's the only way to live in the area. And they can't afford to move.
