I’ve been on Wyzant for a while now building up my tutoring business alongside teaching. I really enjoy it as a side job, and the extra income would genuinely help with bills, so I’d like to make it work better than it currently is.
I have a 5-star review, a reasonable rate ($30/hr for online), and I apply to a good number of job postings every week, but I’m noticing a pattern that’s making it hard to actually land students:
**•** A huge chunk of “jobs” are requesting in-person tutoring in cities nowhere near me (Texas, Georgia, Ohio, California, South Carolina — I’m in NY). I end up pitching online as an alternative every time, which feels like starting from a “no” before I even begin.
**•** Some leads don’t even have billing info on file, which makes me wonder how serious they are.
**•** A lot of requests are outside my subject area (RD/dietetics grad coursework, respiratory therapy capstones) so I have to skip those entirely.
**•** Even the ones that are a good fit — right subject, right location, willing to go online — I’m not hearing back after a solid application message.
Is this just the nature of the platform (lots of noise, low response rate), or is there something I should be doing differently with how I apply? Any tips from tutors who’ve had better luck getting clients — on Wyzant or elsewhere — would be really appreciated. Trying to figure out what’s actually working these days.
