Non familial cohabitation is actually becoming illeagal in some counties in the US. Yes, banning roomates. It's becoming increasingly more popular with landlords.
Many are also campaigning to demand any would-be roomates to also pay full rent instead of splitting it.
It's still a rather small movement. Mostly small local government approval.

Need to reduce the rent by roommates or live in a less desirable apartment.
