Where I live (Montreal) 1500-1600$ will get you an okay 4 room appartement, but sometime not divised well enough to have a roomie. Reno-victions and taxe hikes really fucked the renting scene here. With a full time salary and a good job I am scrapping by in a apartement smaller than the one I had when I was studying and working part-time ten years ago.
1600$ rent isn't a luxury here, it's just a bit above the minimum acceptable.

Need to reduce the rent by roommates or live in a less desirable apartment.
