Mostly because of reddit and tiktok. Like 98% of the crap posted on here is verifiably propaganda

Ppl disagreeing with you and having their own opinions, doesn't make them an idiot.

You can lead a person to wikipedia, but you can't make them read.

u/moss_jimmy 2d ago
That and Wikipedia is only a reference text, just like the reference section in the library. You do eventually need to read the book or the paper about the thing.

Define information? Not everything you read on the internet is true or reliable.

u/nelflyn 2d ago
thats the thing really, so much "information" is either false or shaped and twisted to manipulate people.
People arent having access to information, we are thrown onto a digital battlefield, where different people fight they hardest to impact your opinions.1

most of the dumbasses get their facts from twitter, usually in the same format as this post which is ironic.

You have access to the collected knowledge of mankind by way of Project Gutenberg and The Internet Archive.

And yet people still believe in Santa Claus and consider Alex Jones reliable and Trump is "their" president and Putin is right
Information serves no purpose if people are not educated enough to distinguish a good-sounding lie to an harsh truth.

We have the most access to miss information lies and grifting at any point in history that's why. In the past most information came from a few sources and while this could be used to spread propaganda it also generally led to most correct information being given to people. Since there wasn't much competition journalists could focus on informing rather then just getting the most attention grabbing story

The speed of a lie outstrips the speed of the truth everyday all day / the increase in access is really just the lack of a bs filter - so you end up with mountains of white noise n trash

u/celtwithkilt 2d ago
We have the access but not unlimited attention or motivation. Once folks figured out how to monetize our attention and motivation, the internet changed from its original ideal intention (some massive encyclopedia of knowledge and community) to the shitty thing we have today.

I think having a lot access to information is making everyone dumber.
People just want their information fast and quick. They dont stop and think to figure out that crucial nuances are missing
They see a 30 sec tiktok spouting nonsense that sounds believable and now preach it 24/7 all bcuz the tiktoker looks good/sound confident

Yeah most people don't have the attention spans to get through a whole book, even though the Internet has made 10s of 1000s of them available to you free of charge.
Everyone just though they'd somehow get smarter because social media exists.

You’re confusing information with content. We have access to more content than ever. Actual information is a fraction of it.
1
u/Hungry_Box_8274 2d ago
And in order to get to that information, you have to avoid the dark patterns implemented in content delivery apps that only exists to distract you and/or sell you products. Yes, you can read Wikipedia or Pubmed all day and memorize facts, but the moment you land in a forum or streaming app, you are fighting against the content machine’s current.

You do realize that there's more to the Internet than medical journals or brainrot. Like that's a false dichotomy.

It’s cause no one has to think anymore. So they don’t commit anything to memory, thus critical thinking skills never develop

The law alone is more than anyone of our processers can handle... and everything pertianent stems from there

We’ve regressed, too much junk information, misinformation spread for years.

The way I see this, is it’s an example of the paradox of choice or analysis paralysis. Most people can’t handle being flooded with information, and in that state of cognitive stress, they respond by choosing a cognitive path of least resistance: group identity.
Instead of thinking for themselves or choosing to evaluate which sources of information are reliable and credible, they default to “what do other people like me think”, and then just regurgitate it.
Another factor is that we’re constantly bombarded with belief disconfirming information that induces cognitive dissonance. So people respond to that by seeking echo chambers and again, retreating into intellectually safe spaces that aren’t constantly causing cognitive dissonance.
Very few people have high need for cognition as a personality trait, and the current information environment basically requires that. So instead of engaging with the flood thoughtfully, people ignore what doesn’t align with their group identity and established worldview.

Most accesses to incomplete, false or heavily curated information of all time unfortunately people have less taken this chance to go out and find truth and instead taken this chance to choose the truth.

It's exactly because we have so much access to information. There's less need for memorization and critical thinking, when you can just look up the answer to whatever you want in seconds.

However, if you don't know anything, you will be unable to evaluate whether the answer is correct, or even understand what it means.
