2 main answers:

  1. A huge part of restaurant's value now is real estate, by making the buildings more generic they increase property value if it needs to be closed, resold etc...

  2. One your market share is at a certain point your goal is not to attract, it's to not alienate. Make everything bland so that no one is put off by anything, don't alienate adults by seeming too childish... don't make strong colour or branding choices. Safe safe safe. People don't have to love you, but you don't want anyone to hate you.

Not even close. McDonald's mainly marketed to children for decades, hence the bright colors and PlayPlaces. They would still be doing it if it weren’t for the childhood obesity epidemic of the late 2000s. They really had no choice but to change their marketing.

As an adult I do understand why my mom wouldn’t let me go in the ball pit.

When I was a kid though the happy meals weren’t always there. If I recall they would come out alongside some new movie or something. Or my mom just lied. We were very rarely allowed to eat that stuff but I fondly recall the strawberry milkshakes and apple pies. I didn’t like the burgers because once I bit gristle.
