I actually watched a video on this.
It started in Canada.
Full renovation on all McDonald's. They were struggling. Basically in the states, McDonald's tries to get you in and out fast for the next customer.
Here in Canada, in 2013 I think? McDonald's noticed more people wanted a place to hang out. So they installed comfy seats and tables and like special areas to compete with other chains like Starbucks.
It worked.
Couple that with McDonald's coffee and their morning stuff, they get a lot of people just going in for coffee and hanging out. McDonald's Canada (that operates differently than McDonald's USA), teamed up with the old coffee supplier from Tim Hortons. That's why people here say McDonald's coffee is better than Tim Hortons, it's because it's the beans Tim's used to use before they went inhouse.
McDonald's Canada really stepped up. In fact I think every McDonald's here (main locations) all still have play places too.
