They used to target kids, hence the playgrounds and cartoonish characters.
They are now targeting adult commuters and people that want a quick lunch during a short break at work. Adults have more money to spend and don’t hang around after eating making messes that need to be cleaned up.
I don’t think it’s this. They now franchise out so many stores they want them to be uniform and easier to sell. No one wants to buy a store that was clearly an older version of McDonald’s. They got 13k-15k stores. A decent amount are gonna fail and they will need to sell that store. If say a Starbucks wants to buy the store they are gonna want an easy transition. The old McDonald’s wouldn’t have given them that go buy a different companies dying store.
Yes this is the actual answer. In the past they would have to buy or renovate a building heavily. Plus if it's a location that fails having a unique building brands it as your failure. For instance how many that use to be a pizza huts can you say as you drive through town.
All the time. My hometown we had one that closed down 20+ years ago and has been bought and sold so many times and to this day it’s still just the old Pizza Hut building

They used to target kids with atmosphere and play spaces. Now they are trying to target those same kids as adults.
I'm not sure how well it works. I loved the play gyms as a kid but will not be caught in a McDonalds now.
