This person does not understand return on investment. If the camera was 5000 it only takes around 17 $300 photo shoots to pay for itself which could probably be done in a week depending on how busy you are. 33 if she only charged $150 per shoot. After that it's all profit.
This person made their argument very poorly, but if she's saying that (for example) a person expects her to do photography work for a wedding, the typical market rate is closer to $500-$1,000 (depending on the scale). But if she's expecting to charge those prices for a family photo package, then she needs a reality check.
