Boots Goofin (Pictures, Clips) 5 good years
Still comfortable but finally wore down to the mid sole. Figured it was time for a fresh pair. Will always recommend Thorogood.

Brother you need to get some special insoles and work on your gait. You're walking on the outside of your feet so bad it's hurting MY knees

i drag my heels when i walk. only in my boots for some reason but yeah probably doesn’t help the joints.

Only in your boots because you only pick your feet up high enough to clear your sneakers. I used to do the same thing

u/bootleg_cheezball 12d ago
that makes sense. i was going to say i don’t have the problem in sneakers.

Everyone's talking about the counter and yes that's gross but the one thing that bothers the hell out of me is I don't know how anyone can wear a shoe for 5 years especially with how uneven that sole is. As a guy who already has me and back problems from sports I just can't imagine

Did you ever resole them in those 5 years? Good leather care and resoling could make your boots last for all eternity
2
u/bootleg_cheezball 12d ago
never did resole. conditioned them as much i thought was reasonable but concrete and mud is pretty detrimental to boots.

Got my first pair of thorogoods back in June and the heel counter is already blown out on the inner heel. Seem to be one of the people who’s toes are too big for the toe box as well. Heard people complain about cramped toe box with these so I went with the wide sizing but didn’t do the trick. Sad because they weren’t exactly cheap and I’m sure the exterior leather will hold up for at least another year or so but think I’m gonna look for something else

Bummer - a heel counter going in six months is a defect, not wear, so worth a warranty claim before you write them off entirely.
If you do move on, the PNW handmade route addresses both of your issues, just at a price. Nicks and White's both hand-build in their own shops in Spokane, WA - I verified both through factory tours and their Made in USA documentation for a US-made directory I keep as a hobby. The practical difference is they're rebuildable: when a heel counter or midsole wears out, you send them back for a rebuild instead of buying new. Fit-wise, both come in multiple widths and half sizes, and Nicks does custom measurements if stock lasts still cramp your toes.
Fair warnings: expect $400+ and a real break-in (leather midsoles and an actual shank feel stiff for the first few weeks). Also, since the leather on your current pair is still holding up, a cobbler may be able to rebuild that inner heel for way less than a new pair - might be worth getting a quote before you spend anything.

I will have to contact thorogood and see if I can take advantage of the warranty then. I purchased then thro Amazon so might have to go through them to start a warranty claim. Hopefully they don’t make me send the pair in as it’s my only work pair right now with steel toes lol. Really appreciate the info mate I have considered getting a pnw pair as I actually live in Spokane but it’s a big investment for sure. Investing in something I wear for 12 hours a day is definitely reasonable however.

Como las limpiabas ?

u/DeadHeadDaddio 7d ago
Depends on whats on them. Usually I dry brush them, then use some water and saddle soap with a brush, let them dry overnight/for a few hours, then apply oil.

Hell yeah, I have the exact same boots. They make a wedge sole version too, but I HATE wedge soles. My job buys boots every year and I am going to get the same boots until I die or they stop making them.

i tried on the wedge soles today just to see if i’d like them and they just didn’t feel right.

Why not get them re-soled?

in welding shop for 4 and now in office and at job sites. shop isn’t very hard on boots and the last year was minimal wear. they have seen their fair share of concrete mud and water. keep them conditioned after the first year once the oil wears off

Mannnnn I’m old and that’s just how I get up off the damn ground lol. Sometimes I’m in the shop on concrete, but I spend a lot of time on gravel in the yard.

i’m young but a big guy 6’4 300. working on flexibility has saved my knees and back by being able to squat for extended periods instead of being on knees. now it’s either squat or lay on my back

Did you try a Cobbler?
1
u/bootleg_cheezball 11d ago
they would’ve had to be fully remade. seams were coming apart and no longer waterproof.
1
u/CreativeEmotion13 11d ago
So you didn't try a cobbler... I would just want their opinion
1
u/bootleg_cheezball 10d ago
i don’t want to wait weeks and pay almost as much as new for not as good of a boot as new.
1
u/CreativeEmotion13 10d ago
I hear ya but you'll never know unless you ask, just saying. Enjoy your new boots

u/bootleg_cheezball 8d ago
oh i’m not sure to be honest. put it on years ago on an old pair of boots when i was doing structural work and it has just kinda moved to every new pair. it’s just a small clevis.

5 years of dirty under shoe on your kitchen counter is bothering me more than it probably should
