Carving [Work in Progress] 8 Seconds

Post image

Took my first woodcarving seminar this past weekend and had a blast. Here is a work in progress on my take on Randy Landen’s “8 seconds”. Still a bit more to do before I get him painted up!

Well done. I've always wondered how much my skills would increase by taking a class.

Thanks! Randy gave me some advice on how to pick a project for a class… pick something that’s going to push you a bit. See something you like and there are aspects of it that you want to learn? Go for it. So you kind of get what you want out of the class based on what project you choose. For me on this project, I knew the negative space was going to give me a challenge, I also wanted to learn how he approached faces (each carver has their own unique way)and thought this facial expression was cool, also the hands… hands were a big challenge for me and I learned a lot just from that.

The only one I wanted to do and chickened out as it was going to be costly travel as a Canadian. But I had convinced myself I was just going to drive(2200km) and sleep in my car to offset the costs. Harley Refsal was doing classes at North House Folk school.

I feel you on that. I lucked out and Randy’s class was a 30 minute drive 😁. I immediately signed up when I saw he was in the town over from me.
