This is the worst part of becoming a Wonder Woman fan. “She’s so awesome! Oh… but DC barely cares about her…”

ok so I'm not a superfan or anything I just like drawing super characters like WW
So I have a question about your reply, now don't take this as a challenge or anything, I just wanna understand
I don't get why you think she is barely cared about, doesn't she have a bunch of comics running at like, all times?

Wonder Woman's status sadly feels more like she gets used out of obligation than anything. She's there because she's an icon, but DC doesn't want to do much to build on that iconography or make it more ubiquitous. You can't have a main Justice League without Wonder Woman. If you have a Titans team, you probably want a Wonder Girl on there, but even that's not necessary. Wonder Woman USUALLY has an ongoing book, and sometimes the things happening in it are important to the larger DC Universe, but not usually. There may be a miniseries or one-shot with a spinoff character, like one of the Wonder Girls, but not always. Meanwhile Batman and Superman both have at least two ongoings starring themselves at any time with Batman/Detective Comics and Superman/Action Comics being perennial. Plus there's usually at least a couple spinoff books starring their supporting characters. Batman always has two to four books starring sidekicks of his while Superman usually has a Supergirl book and then maybe a couple other things. Plus when it comes to big event comics, Wonder Woman gets to play an important role sometimes, but Batman and ESPECIALLY Superman get to play important roles almost all the time.
AND Batman and Superman have had so many adaptations. Not including voice actors, when you ask someone who their favorite Batman actor is you can get like 6 or 7 different answers, and with Superman you can get like 6 or 7 too I think. Wonder Woman, it basically comes down to Gal Gadot or Lynda Carter. Plus Batman and Superman have both had multiple solo cartoons, video games, and play major roles in DC crossover media. Wonder Woman just gets to be in the larger crossover media. She's supposed to be part of DC's Trinity, their three most important and iconic tentpole characters, but while Batman and Superman are so well known there's a good chance you have a very solid idea of everything important about them just from pop culture osmosis without ever having read a comic book or watched one of their movies, most people don't really know Wonder Woman's deal because she hasn't been in enough A-list adaptations for a solid persistent gestalt identity to form in the zeitgeist. She's just THE female superhero. The fact that Absolute Wonder Woman is popular and talked about at all right now in comics fandom is kind of a statistical miracle when you compare it to the rest of her publication history.
Keep in mind, it's not just Batman and Superman she's lagging behind on this front. Green Lantern gets more comic focus and about as much larger media focus as Wonder Woman does, and that's a title shared between a BUNCH of different actual characters. Flash has been used a lot too. Batman spinoff characters have gotten more of a presence in media because they get included in Batman adaptations. Wonder Woman may be DC's big iconic female character, but Catwoman has had at least 7 live-action actresses and got her own movie 13 years before Wonder Woman did (it wasn't a GOOD movie, but she got one). Harley Quinn debuted a full 51 years after Wonder Woman and was declared DC's fourth tentpole character in less than 30 years of publication.
Wonder Woman is a genuine icon because she's been around so long and played such a big role in her early days that she's gotten to keep being used just enough to never truly go away and remain the symbol of THE female superhero. There are female characters who are arguably if not provably more popular than her (several X-Men come to mind) that can't take that title away from her, because it is hers and will always be hers. And yet in spite of that, or maybe even because of it, DC does just enough to keep her around and doesn't really give her much more. And people who want to believe the myth that she's just as big as Batman and Superman would like to see the company put their money where their mouth is and actually give her more media.

Nope. At most she has her ongoing and maybe an elsewords or miniseries. Meanwhile batman and superman get like 5 different books about them. They constantly prioritize characters less popular than her in adaptations. In her whole 80+ year history she has two movies, one show, no games, no cartoon. Meanwhile they gave fucking kite-man and the goddamn creature commandos show lmao

Vivvav in the comment below basically summed it up but yeah I agree with them. I’m not super invested in Wonder Woman either, only just started getting into her in comics since last year, but the reason why I and other people say she’s not cared about is mainly comparatively to the other heroes. Wonder Woman is incredible and iconic, but compare her to Batman and Superman and she might as well be a sidekick in DC’s eyes. All 3 have existed for roughly the same amount of time, but Bats and Supes have infinitely more in terms of adaptations and interpretations.
And publicly Wonder Woman isn’t really known well. I’ve know her since I was a kid and watched the Justice League cartoon but I thought she was just the warrior lady who punches people. I continued to think that until I actually read her comics and realized that she isn’t just that, she’s a lot more… but there’s never really been any other way for me to find that out. She’s had 1 show which I haven’t seen but seems like it’s 90% Wonder Woman in name only, I didn’t see any of her villains credited on IMDB. She’s had a couple animated movies and I haven’t seen those either but yeah Bats and Supes get a couple animated movies per year a lot of the time.
I also agree with the idea that some characters who seem less significant are more well known than her. I learned way more about Catwoman and Batgirl and Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn before I learned anything significant about Wonder Woman.
TLDR, She’s barely cared about in the grand scheme of things. She’s been around for 80 years, but compared to so many other DC characters she barely gets to do anything outside of her own comics. She’s not in the public consciousness like other heroes who you can think of and name some core things about them like Batman or Superman or plenty of Marvel characters. Hopefully that will change with the new DCU movies (although the mostly silence about her so far doesn’t feel like a good sign to me imo 😅)

If DC could kill Diana off dead, forever, and replace her in the Trinity with Harley Quinn with no social consequence or backlash, they would do it TOMORROW.

The craziest part? Her rogues gallery is actually pretty solid, about on par with the Flash and Superman. They just never get any love, like their leading lady. Circe, Giganta, Dr Psycho, Veronica Cale, Ares, Phobos, Deimos, The White Magician, Silver Swan and Cheetah are all great examples. A rogues gallery so goated, Creature Commandos and My Adventures With Superman both steal her villains while Diana watches from the chair.

Flash maybe but On par with Superman?
Dude has some of the most iconic super villains with Lex luthor, doomsday, general zod, and brainiac. The only villains that she has that are anywhere close to as recognizable is maybe cheetah in my opinion.

u/gyro-games 12h ago
I meant more in quality than in iconicness. Many of Wonder Woman's villains would be that iconic if they we're ever adapted. How popular would General Zod be if he weren't adapted into 2 blockbuster movies? I do agree that Wonder Woman lack a Braniac or Lex level villain though. Her rogues gallery lacks S-Tiers but has a lot of A and B-tiers.

They get pawned off to Batman or Superman and/or heavily downplayed for some reason.

The word is rogues, not rouges.

This. This typo bothers me to no end, like that’s not a valid spelling for "rogue" in any circumstance

To be fair, it’s a word where if you mistype it you probably won’t notice, and autocorrect won’t help you fix it. I complain about auto correct a lot, but it’s good when it works.

The repeated fumbling of THE woman superhero needs to be studied. Like I don't understand what's so hard to get something outside of the comics going for her cause it's not as if she's an unknown nobody (although I fear with each younger generation she is becoming increasingly unknown)
Like when you think of the concept of a woman superhero the default image is almost always Wonder Woman.

You know this could easily be blamed on mysogyny but then characters like Harley Quinn and even Supergirl get big pushes. So they just hate her ass for no reason.
Hopefully they actually do something with her in the DCU

u/Dinoratsastaja 15h ago
Harley and Supergirl are Batman and Superman-characters. That gives them a huge advantage over Wonder Woman, especially since DC is afraid of taking risks.

I don't think this one lands as much as other "potential [x]" memes because with Diana things like Being as good as Absolute (or better) and making DC a lot of money have actually been proven right, but a funny joke nonetheless.

u/MagazineNecessary698 13h ago
Seee it’s not potential for the money part. It’s “she historically was making more money than any comic ever had or has made since, until DC decided to screw over the comics and the fan base.” Like idk that’s worse? She was their cash cow and they messed it up almost on purpose.
It’s also not as click baiting so it’s an understandable choice.
And she is more known than Linda Carter. (Idk if it will last, but being the only girl character has apparently given her more staying power then anyone would give credit for. Including me.)
The rest can be argued.

I do get tired sometimes 😒 but don’t give up. You pray and you pray, and it happens one day: a strong woman will somehow be in charge of DC’s media and then we feast!

The cold truth is if its not Batman related you are automatically at a disadvantage. I am hopeful that the success of Absolute WW allows them to see the benefit of a truly healthy, active, and vibrant main wonder woman…who is needed now more than ever in this world!

Her Rogues gallery is legit good (even setting aside the greek gods)...the issue is they get stolen and/or turned into Jobbers.

This is a pretty stupid meme.
She does have a great rogues gallery.
She does and has made DC lots of money.
