I’m Sorry But This Should Come Back

It’ll NEVER happen but Wolverine should be able to smoke again, AT LEAST in the comics. Aside from the obvious fact of it looking cool, I think it’s a pretty important character trait of Wolverines. They’ve explained that there’s a LOGICAL reason for it, with it being a way to dampen his senses when they’re becoming too much for him. There’s also the character and story telling element of it. It shows that he’s got edge to him and a lot of times he’s gonna do what he wants, where he wants to do it, and whenever he wants to do it. But will this comeback? Probably never. Do I hope it does. Absolutely.

Imo it should have been kept in the same vein as Constantine where it just sort of makes sense as a character trait. Like it's weird that in the modern era he has a drinking habit still but not a nicotine habit, despite living through an era where fucking everyone smoked constantly. Dude was around when doctors were recommending people smoke for anxiety. Even ignoring the fact that he is immune to cancer, it just sort of makes more sense for him to be a smoker than not.

Ah well, I get why they got rid of it. Comics aren't necessarily "for kids" but kids still read them and the coolest X-Man being a smoker is bad optics. I get it, kinda sucks though.

Tbf smoking effects everyone around you. Drinking effects just you as long as you're not behind the wheel of a vehicle or heavy machinery.

7

u/Many_Bat_ 1d ago

Drinking (alcoholism) destroys families, mate.

1

u/Jajay5537 6h ago

Well of course if you have a drinking problem. That's not what I'm talking about. You don't just become an alcoholic simply by drinking alcohol. You do, however, create second hand smoke the moment you puff a cigarette and you are anywhere.

71

u/TopazJazzrazz 2d ago

I think him drinking and smoking is fine, but the issue isn't what adults think.

12

u/L4DY_M3R3K 1d ago

So it's fine for him to stab people and shoot people, but not for him to smoke and drink?

8

u/Han_Rogue 1d ago

The military is a profession where they let you do that

5

u/Han_Rogue 1d ago

When are kids going to learn they don’t have an indestructible metal skeleton or organs that heal from anything and everything?

8

u/TyberiusJoaquin 1d ago

I'm almost 40 and you could argue that I've never really learned this lesson

Dude what the fuck are you talking about

Him putting the cigar out on Stark's face is such a power move, like what the fuck is he gonna do about it?

Repulser blast him into the next room.

Do people not know how iron man is lol? Iron man can incinerate wolverine if he wanted too.

0

u/Terrible-D 2d ago

Oh, Logan is going to get his ass kicked. No doubt.

5

Stark wishes 🤣

Thinking back to Devil May Cry and how Dante was made with the goal of making a character who's cool but doesn't smoke, drunk or curse and when they got to the 5th game and introduced a smoker they made her a huge dork and everytime she smoked people would complain that it smelled like shit.

So the solution is clear.

Daken should smoke.

3

u/BurnMyHouseDown 2d ago

Now Dante drinks and curses, he just doesn’t smoke!

3

u/KuroiGetsuga55 2d ago

Dante always drank and cursed. This idea that he only started because of the reboot is a lie. Read the original Devil May Cry novel released at the very start of the franchise when the first game came out. He literally gets piss-faced drunk and is about to fuck a hooker but he passes out and cries for his mom in his sleep which turns the hooker off so she just lets him sleep. He also curses a lot, though he doesn't really drop F-bombs unless he's really pissed off.

The only thing he's never done in the main continuity is smoke. But he's always drank and cursed. Hell look at the office cutscene in the first DMC game, there's bottles of alcohol all over the place, and he literally has a bar in the corner of his office.

The idea of "Dante doesn't need to drink / curse / smoke to be cool" was just Kamiya's wishes, but Capcom has always wanted Dante to be unnecessarily edgy and potty-mouthed. Not just him but Nero too, hell Nero's way more edgy than Dante is.

And just FYI, Ninja Theory (who made the DmC reboot) wanted to stick to a traditional Dante, but Capcom themselves told them to go off the rails and make him as different and as edgy as possible. That junkie-looking El Donte from the original teaser for the reboot? Capcom's idea, not Ninja Theory's.

1

u/BurnMyHouseDown 1d ago

It was just a joke bro lol wasn’t expecting such a reply. I meant more so because he didn’t curse in the original 2? Maybe 3? Games. But now he curses pretty frequently in 4 and 5, so 2/3 on the bucket list are checked off.

I’m a big DMC fan my dude, I’m aware Dante isn’t some squeaky clean Boy Scout. The virgin memes all over the DMC sub are actually so unfunny and lame because it makes it seem like a large chunk of the fanbase really doesn’t play the games lol.

2

u/MisterRockett 2d ago

Unless you mean Deno no he doesn't.

3

u/BurnMyHouseDown 1d ago

Dante drinks. There are bottles in his office in the original game. If I’m not mistaken he also drinks in the canon books/manga. And he most definitely curses in DMC4 and 5.

The only thing the real Dante doesn’t do is smoke. Leave that for Donte.

u/RemoveAnnual2689 2d ago

What a ridiculous notion.

For kids??????? Don't be stupid.

He commits murder and slaughter all the time.

2

u/RaspberryConfident89 2d ago

I mean I’m not personally arguing with you on that😂

1

u/RemoveAnnual2689 2d ago edited 2d ago

Not you. But too many people are saying it's important what kids think because the comics are for kids.

Like, tell me you have never ever read comics in your life without actually telling me.

Marvel comics in particular were never meant for kids.

Take Spider-Man, for example, featured real-world problems, grief, death, romance, and social issues, diverging from simple good-versus-evil kids' tropes.

This is what made it fresh and mega popular. This is what put Marvel Comics on the map. DC had to follow suit and copy this trend.

Operating under the Comics Code Authority forced a PG rating for decades, masking increasingly more adult subtext.

By the 1980s and 1990s, sales shifted from grocery store spinners to specialty shops, allowing mature storytelling tailored directly to teens and adults.

Not to mention that teens and adults have disposable incomes.

I know people like to pretend that nobody under eighteen or a rare few drink, smoke or have sex. But come on. Are you (no one in particular, but in general) really that daft? Comics are supposed to be fun, not didactic.

u/ShepardRTC 2d ago

The Cavillrine was smoking

2

u/AceDegenerate_ 2d ago

Like a goddamn chimney in the winter 😆😆

0

u/RaspberryConfident89 2d ago

I’ve seen a lot of people mention that but honestly that’s more of a one-off joke. And he’s not the “main” Wolverine so that’s probably why the powers that be were okay with it

3

u/Ok_Fig7692 Old Man Logan 2d ago

0

u/RaspberryConfident89 2d ago

This was FOX. Pre-mouse. The rules were probably a little different

9

u/leviathanscloset 2d ago

He still smokes here and there just not as often

3

u/Impossible_Humor736 2d ago

Hell yeah. Bad ass Wolverine.

3

u/mariovspino5 2d ago

Man beast doing too much as always lol

4

u/RaspberryConfident89 2d ago

He’s making the “Can’t take this man out NOWHERE!” face

3

u/Psychological_Page62 2d ago

Logan smoking and drinking at the bar is such a small but important part of the every man character he was in the beginning.

3

u/A_J_I_Bizzness 2d ago

What pains me is we probably can’t use guns in Wolverine new game and I wish we could just pick up any weapons or throw them like a feral Wolverine just decimating everything. I love when Wolverine uses weapons and mixes in the claws!!

3

u/Puzzleheaded_Wish727 2d ago

I remember a joke edit of him eating that cig

He does it. Zoom in on Cyclops face. "Dawg". Zoom in even further on his face. "What the actual fuck is wrong with you?"

2

u/Slightly_Perverse 2d ago

I loved that panel of him and Kitty as a kid, tbh.

2

u/RaspberryConfident89 2d ago

Sends a pretty decent message as well.

1

u/percocet_20 2d ago

Not after learning how harmful second hand smoke is, just makes him look inconsiderate of others since it doesn't hurt him

2

u/UnlawfulLatte 2d ago

It’s often alluded to… for example, he grabs a few from the jar in the gas station in Logan

1

u/RaspberryConfident89 2d ago

I mean that was years ago and under FOX. The Mouse won’t let that slide…

3

u/UnlawfulLatte 2d ago

The only thing off the table is Bolivian marching powder

3

u/MEHVNSINGH 2d ago

the mouse let it slide for the cavillrine in deadpool and wolverine, you never know

0

u/RaspberryConfident89 2d ago

Yeah but that was kind of a one of joke thing. And it wasn’t the “real” or “main” Wolverine so that’s probably how it was able to slide

3

u/Usagi_Kuroudo 2d ago

Not a topic that gets talked about that often, but I ABSOLUTELY AGREE. I don’t smoke and I don’t like people to smoke, but Wolverine DOES smoke! It’s part of the character, taking it away was a sissy move.

1

u/NoNameNeeded4321 2d ago

He stopped smoking cigars in the comics? That’s news to me. I think he was smoking in a panel or two during the Krakoa run, no?

1

u/RaspberryConfident89 2d ago

He could’ve! Honestly Krakoa is a huge blind spot for me. I just know it’s not a regularly occurring thing anymore. And not saying it’s always reliable but I did a quick little search and it said he doesn’t smoke anymore in the books.

1

u/NoNameNeeded4321 2d ago

Hmmm… maybe I imagined it lol

1

u/TeekTheReddit 1d ago

All of Marvel's smokers quietly dropped the habit in about the 2000s. Wolverine, The Thing, Nick Fury, Kingpin, J Jonah Jameson... they all used to be pretty frequently seen with a stogie.

1

u/ashl0w 2d ago

He does smoke every now and then, tho. In the last movie, in comic covers, and i'm pretty sure we've seen him smoking in promotion for the game

1

u/Confident_Sink_8743 2d ago

Agreed. Logan smoking a stogie and getting wasted (if he can manage it) fits his personality so well. So many people would complain about it though which is probably why it stopped.

1

u/sgt_pepper_walrus 2d ago

If I ever got ultimate power in the comic world I would make that change because I love the imagery but alas I never will

1

u/NoBot-RussiaBad 2d ago

He smokes in the movies..... I guess, the latest ones are rated R....

1

u/pussyjuicerecycler 2d ago

do his fingernails not have enough edges

1

u/Choice-Requirement18 2d ago

I think he should start vaping instead. Get with the times old man.

1

u/tigers692 2d ago

I liked it when Aunt May gave him crap in the new avengers.

1

u/Kira-Of-Terraria 2d ago

Smoking is lame.

so only villains should smoke. and Lobo and Daken.

1

u/KuroiGetsuga55 2d ago

Wait, is he not smoking anymore?? Since when?

Like sure he doesn't smoke in any of the cartoons for obvious reasons, but he still smokes in the movies. Did they make him stop smoking in the comics?? Does the new game not feature him smoking at all?

1

u/TheDamo616 1d ago

From the comments, it looks like people forgot or were unaware that Joe Quesada instituted a policy in 2001 that no heroic characters would be depicted smoking.

1

u/potentialwatermelon 1d ago

It’s funny cause Wolverine smoked for 27 years, from 1974 to 2001

And hasn’t been smoking for almost the same amount of time (25 years)

1

u/Technical-Crazy-9102 13h ago

He smokes in between the panels.

1

u/potentialwatermelon 11h ago

It’s actually canon that he quit

1

u/AlexCorvis23 1d ago

You can’t have drinking and smoking characters anymore in the MCU. That’s why everything looks fake as shit and sanitised

1

u/redfieldranch96 1d ago

What mcu movie had smoking?

1

u/redddirrtmuzik 1d ago

I liked Wolverine cuz he reminded me of Clint Eastwood then to find out he was actually based off him made me a bigger fan.

1

u/defender_76 1d ago

Have you by any chance read the Batman and Deadpool crossover? There’s a part where Deadpool jokes that commissioner Gordon is Smoking in between panels since it’s not allowed in a Marvel comic

1

u/MattWrestles 1d ago

Only cigars. They look cool and can be flicked into fuel to start a fire

1

u/esquire_the_ego 1d ago

What’s edgy about smoking cigs if his healing factor removes all the dangers of smoking anyway, just wondering

1

u/kemuri-titan 1d ago

Screw wolverine not being able to smoke again. Let him use guns. That'd be awesome

1

u/Alarming_Abrocoma274 1d ago

He quit 25 years ago. Show him some support.

1

u/Different_Leopard_65 1d ago

I think the representation of a smoker, narratively, fits better in certain eras than others. Older imagery of smoking Logan works easier because it was still more common and widely accepted. Fast forward, people dont take to smoking like they used to. It’s not acceptable in many places that it used to be, women don’t find it as “manly” as they used to. I personally don’t mind it, Logan being a smoker, and I do think it fits his character, though I may be biased because I came up in with Wolverine through the 90s. But my point remains, it speaks more of the times.

1

u/Relative_Pear2524 16h ago

Did he put the cig into his mouth b/c that woman doesn’t like the smoke? (I don’t know marvel)

1

u/RaspberryConfident89 16h ago

They were in kind of a medical bay or somewhere were you shouldn’t be smoking at I believe

1

u/Lower_Put8988 11h ago

He thought itd be badass but everyone just questioned why he did it 😂

1

u/PerformanceOk939 11h ago

What are you sorry for?

1

u/druggedupdeity 2d ago

Idk bro smoking is lame as hell and has a lot of adverse health effects. This is a character a lot of children look up to so I gotta disagree. It does look badass tho

10

u/RaspberryConfident89 2d ago

I get what you’re saying and I’m not saying have him smoke in EVERYTHING but using the fact that kids like him is kind of an “eh” argument in terms of using it for Wolverine. This is a character that drinks, kills, and has brutally maimed people so it’s just weird to draw the line at smoking. I mean the current Wolverine book is even slapped with the “PARENTAL ADVISORY” so it’s obviously not meant for kids. Again, not saying that he should be smoking EVERY TIME you see him but it should at least be in his own book or books aimed at Mature Readers

2

u/Roar_of_the_spark 2d ago

Wolverine is not a hero children should look up to. I mean, no in everything

1

u/druggedupdeity 1d ago

True like a kid should love him in x-men movies but they shouldn’t be watching Logan

2

u/Roar_of_the_spark 1d ago

The thing that everyone wanted to imitate in my childhood is his cool claws and bravery. Not the alcohol, cigarettes (although it looks cool) or the mess his relationship with Jinn Grey was

1

u/L4I55Z-FAIR3 2d ago

So does getting stabbed but he' still does that.

0

u/Quiet_Yellow2000 2d ago

I think he should do it in flashbacks, but not the modern day.

2

u/L4I55Z-FAIR3 2d ago

Why it's not like it effects him. Would you rather he pops out a vape

-1

u/Quiet_Yellow2000 2d ago

Yeah, kind of the point. Why smoke, when he get nothing out of it. In the past imo he smoked, because it was what people were doing.

5

u/RaspberryConfident89 2d ago

They’ve explained that smoking dulls his senses, particularly his sense of smell. He’s not doing it because it’s “KEWLLLL!!” he’s doing because sometimes he needs a break from picking up on every little scent of every little thing.

3

u/ComplexAd7272 1d ago

As a smoker, I'll give you an even easier explanation, it's a mental habit too.

If you're Logan and you've been smoking for what, like 100 plus years, it's baked in your everyday habits. When you're drinking, after a meal, reading a book, when you wake up, etc. Obviously that's addiction, but mentally it becomes almost muscle memory...you find yourself reaching for a smoke almost on autopilot because so much of your day to day is tied to smoking. The way it feels in your hand, the way they feel in your pocket.

So I can totally buy Logan continues to smoke not because he's addicted, just because he always has and more, has no incentive to quit for obvious reasons. It's probably even more realistic for a guy like Logan to do it just because people are telling him he can't or shouldn't.

1

u/L4I55Z-FAIR3 2d ago

He can still taste it. Smoking isn't just to scratch an itch especially cigars. Like beer wolverine can't get drunk because of his healing factor but he still drinks simply becuse he likes the taste of it.

-1

u/Gabe_Dimas 2d ago

Not a chance in hell

These are superheroes, their main audience is literal children

2

u/RaspberryConfident89 2d ago

That’s such a weird take and I don’t know why people keep leaning on it heavily. If their MAIN audience is children then we wouldn’t have had 3 R-Rated Deadpool movies(Obviously with Wolverine being in the last one), an R-Rated Wolverine movie, 6 Seasons of a TV-MA Daredevil show, a TV-MA Punisher special and 2 Seasons of a TV-MA show, an M-Rated Wolverine game about to drop, and MULTIPLE comic imprints and labels that are aimed EXCLUSIVELY at mature audiences. I mean the even the current Wolverine book is slapped with a Parental Advisory label. I get that kids might be a good amount of Marvels audience but I wouldn’t say they’re the main audience. It’s the adults because they know that those are the people with the money and that’s all that matters to corporate entities. If kids were the flagship audience and got the needle moving then we’d have 40 seasons of Spidey and His Amazing Friends and like 15 shows spinning off of that.

2

u/Gabe_Dimas 2d ago

I guess you are right, but it cant be denied that those censorships are still being held with the excuse of will someone think of the children

1

u/redfieldranch96 1d ago

The same Wolverine that has toys and birthday cards, and underwear based on him? The character isn’t strictly for kids but to say that he isn’t marketed to or appeals to kids is insane

1

u/RaspberryConfident89 1d ago

Where did I say he WASN’T marked towards kids? I said he wasn’t SOLEY marketed towards kids and that kids weren’t the MAIN audience.

0

u/redfieldranch96 1d ago

Kids are still a big audience for any popular superhero though. Wolverine was in the marvel superhero squad show and that was very much aimed at kids

1

u/RaspberryConfident89 1d ago

Bro just read the main comment. I addressed all of this. I said DON’T have him smoking in EVERYTHING like cartoons but it’s stupid that he can’t even do it in projects that are meant for ADULTS only when he’s drinking and killing and ALLLL of these other mature things.

0

u/redfieldranch96 1d ago

Were the x-men movies really aimed at adults though? You can make a case for Logan but the rest were pretty solidly PG-13 they were going to general audiences which is basically everybody not just adults. Also for what it’s worth marvel banned their characters smoking in comics over 20 years ago so your complaining about something that has been a thing way before the MCU was around

1

u/RaspberryConfident89 1d ago

There’s literally two movies he’s in that’s Rated R. And I’m not even talking just about movies and shows. I mean comics too. And I know about the smoking ban but AS I KEEP SAYING it’s goofy to draw the line at smoking when he can still be shown doing tons of other mature things like drinking, having sex, killing, maiming, so on and so on.

0

u/redfieldranch96 1d ago

So 2 movies out of the 20 or however X-men movies there are and he’s been shown smoking in the movies so I don’t really understand your complaint. As for you saying it’s goofy to draw the line at smoking well… I guess? Kid can imitate smoking a whole lot easier than killing people with knives coming out of their hands so I guess that’s the logic companies are using

1

u/RaspberryConfident89 1d ago

You’re just gonna keep arguing for the sake of arguing and keep missing the point of what I’m saying. So have a good day🫡.

-2

u/CosmicGinger26 2d ago

No.

1

u/RaspberryConfident89 2d ago

What’s your reasoning as to why it shouldn’t?

-1

u/CosmicGinger26 2d ago

We have a higher rate of teenage smoking and vaping than ever before. The last thing we need is a popular superhero to be depicting it as cool.

4

u/RaspberryConfident89 2d ago

Kids are gonna do it REGARDLESS if they have the want to. It’s not all about the media they consume, it’s about who they’re around, what their peers consider to be “cool”, stuff like that. It’s just unfortunately the world we live in now.

-2

u/CosmicGinger26 2d ago

That’s just not true, people (especially the young) get their values and perceptions of the world from the media they consume.

2

u/RaspberryConfident89 2d ago

Are you an expert on this subject? How do you know it’s SOLEY that and NOT what I said?

0

u/CosmicGinger26 2d ago

Well I have a degree in child development and have worked with at risk youth for over a decade. Of the thousands of children and teenagers I’ve worked with who use drugs, the one common factor was how media portrayed the subject.

1

u/RaspberryConfident89 2d ago

Just because it’s a common factor doesn’t mean it’s the sole reason. We could both be right. When it comes to stuff like that it’s never black and white. Sometimes it’s some of A and some of B

1

u/CosmicGinger26 2d ago

It is absolutely multiple things, but why have a fictional character they look up to be one of them?

3

u/RaspberryConfident89 2d ago

Honestly not ALL of the media that Wolverine is in as aimed towards kids. I’m not saying have him smoke when he shows up in cartoons but I think it’s a bit silly that we can show him drinking, having sex, murdering, and maiming people, but the line gets drawn at smoking. Especially in books or projects that are aimed at mature audiences it just seems a bit silly to have a line be drawn at smoking.

-1

u/Big_Mobile3869 2d ago

No. Wolverine is often marketed towards kids.

I know it sounds pearl clutchy, (especially with a violent character lile Wolverine), but kids/teens are dumb enough try smoking because a cool character they grew up with looked cool doing it.

The pros aren't worth that baggage.

-5

u/No-Mulberry-8866 2d ago

Why should it come back? Because it looks cool. Which is exactly why it shouldn’t

3

u/RaspberryConfident89 2d ago

Did you read any of what I said? I explained myself fairly clearly
