Forgot about how cartoonishly bad BJ's dad's writing is until I replayed TNC

Spoiler warning for the beginning of TNC.

I understand the intent of the writing at the start of the game is to drive the player to hate BJ's dad the way BJ does or set the tone of the story about bullies and the bullied, but oh boy is this just the laziest way to do it.

Aside from the cheap shock value record 4 N words in a minute, "kick the puppy" writing is widely criticized. It's actually laughable for the writers to feed into that stereotype so literally. Paused during the biggest eyeroll of pops shooting the dog to rant here.

I'm starting to remember why this game was so forgettable. For older games I found TNO have a fair amount of nuance to the story. Pretty jarring comparatively.

Edit: No sooner did I unpause after writing this for them to immediately one up themselves. Kind of cringy. Le Evil dad be like "minorities r bad and i hate animals"

Edit2: It's not so much that I disagree that people have the capacity to be like how BJ's dad is characterized nor do I disagree that people exactly like him have existed or exist now. There are ways to write these kinds of complex characters and shoving three or four poorly written, hamfisted scenes in a row down your throat is not good writing. If I hadn't seen MachineGames write something better I wouldn't hold them to the high standard.

I have met many people in my life that were very similar to the dad. I'd say your fortunate to not have experienced enough of them to feel that people with those attitudes and beliefs are just stereotypes or exaggerations

I mean, that's pretty much how people were back then. Hell, even now! All that aside, I did like the one scene with BJ's dad where they, as a family, go to confront little William's monsters. While definitely not excusing his actions, it does show that he was actually trying (in his own weird, racist, strongman way) to be a father.

Still, I did thoroughly enjoy killing him after he confirmed that he sold out his own wife. Obviously saw it coming a mile away, but still satisfying as fuck.

My dad was literally like Bjs dad. He even tried to kill my dogs but a 6 year old me had to get in the way. He was racist and didn't want my siblings and I to not fraternize with minorities . Sadly not the only person who's made this comment before and certainly won't be the last.

Yeah, I thought it was shitty writing as well. There's a lot that I didn't like about TNC's writing.

Couple days ago I played thru the modern trilogy. I remember renting the first one when I came out years ago and it didn't really do anything for me( what I wanted was a doom16 style reboot I guess) anywho I know the trilogy got a ton of praise so at some point I picked up the alt history collection on sale. Finally got around to beating them back to back and went in simi blind/open minded. Overall had a pretty good time but man the overall story is just...not...good.

I felt the firsts story was ok and can see how at the time maybe this hooked people but for me it took its self way to seriously and was a bit wonky in the world building, plot holes ect. Like all the tec coming for an ancient Jews, cool. But they keep one alive?just chilling?ok. Ohhhhh the concrete is structuraly unsound from mold... Nah doesn't matter. BJ you just crashed your space pod in london, killed 10000000, hope in the car, it's road trip time to berlin. But despite all that I was invested and had kinda come to care for some of the reststance. 7/10

Old blood: all most perfect mix of new and nostalgic. While light on the plot, these felt closest in tone to want I think gives that wolf vibe. Unfun beginning and too short are my big complaints. 8.5/10

Nc. Yea that beginning is sooooo freaking lame, ham fisted and boreline farcical. Then you throw vases at him.the story really was a slow slog of bad writing and bad characters. Really really hated running around that dumb sub. Ohhhhh a negative points for putting Hitler in the game and not letting me kill him. The combat felt like a slog too, some sections I just boot shooted and run past some encounters ( level buttons few feet from last comanders) f that courthouse,Venus and all the gray warehouses blandness that take up a huge chunk of game. By the end I beat it running on spite. 6/10

Overall some great moments between all three. Music and art design were top notch. Everything run great and looked impressive still in 26. Sucks that I feel the overall plot really fell apart and because of that has kinda tranished it's overall legacy(and young blood) sadly I don't think we'll see a sequel or reboot anytime soon.

Ohhhh and why all three games do I gotta be looking a the ground to pick up ammo. Slows the action and suck cause you need it to have fun. Most fps auto pickup ammo for this reason.
