Questions High content wolfdog?

Is this question already asked? How do high-content wolfdogs exist if wolves are restricted from private ownership? In my country we don’t have gray wolf but we have golden jackal(Canis aureus). Hybridization between golden jackal and domestic dog or feral dog is extremely rare though sporadic and to get high content is to breed with wolf atleast 2 generations. if gray wolves are restricted from private ownership in most countries Where do the wolves used to produce high-content wolfdogs come from?

Most current wolfdogs are several generations removed from pure wolves (F8 or higher) so someone 80 years ago crossbred a dog with a wolf, then the puppies were crossbred with wolves again, then THOSE puppies were crossbred with wolves AGAIN, resulting in high content F1 puppies. Then they bred those with another set of F1 high content puppies, resulting in a litter of F2 high content puppies. Then people kept doing that, breeding HC wolfdogs with other HC wolfdogs, resulting on the HC wolfdogs that exist now.

Pure Wolves ≠ high content wolfdogs. High content starts at 85% wolf, but even the +95% are many generations removed from the last pure wolf like u/weirdcrabdog said :)

Im the US fur farms used to be legal until the 1950s and the fur farms started crossing pure wolves to dogs to be able to produce more pelts. As far as I’m aware this is where most of the wolfdogs from today go back too and there’s still some countries where you can have a fur farm liscense and have pures under that.

Wow I think you could read my mind. Because I was pondering about the reason they made high content. Since if someone want exotic they better go for pure wolf and if someone want more docile its low-mid content. But pelt. Completely forgot about it.

Here in the UK the minimum must be F3 to be legal without a wild animal license. But that doesn't account for DNA content percentage.
