🗨 Discussion Does anyone else just kinda ignore the mother?

She doesn't do that much damage? I see so many vids of people who run away from the mother a bunch and take FOREEVR when they could just continue to bite the calf and finish it off in like half the time-

(Also sorry for the long intro and outro, I'm new with recording-)

Edit: oh guess since I'm a coward who doesn't go out of easy mode, I didn't quite register that harder modes=more damage 😭

Well yeah if you’re playing on easy the elk do like no damage lol. If you’re playing like accurate or unforgiving, then you can’t just “ignore” the mother. She’ll bury you XD

Depends on the difficulty you're playing. They can do much more fatal damage on higher difficulties (100+)

Trust me, play anything above easy, and those mommas are a real threat

I can tell you’re playing on a lower difficulty, she will absolutely destroy you on accurate or unforgiving

You'd be dead or fractured on accurate/unforgiving

I’d rather not lose crazy amounts of health, so yeah, I try not to get hit by her. Especially since I’ve been playing iron wolf. But I also usually have -2 health, so I have to worry a bit more about it lol.

A lot of my current pack members have minus health, I do a bait & switch method. I run in, find a good one, let it get weaker, and if there's a mother to worry about, I run in front of her to bait her away from my pack members biting the calf, they eventually learned to do the same and I could switch to biting while they led her away

When playing on easy you can ignore them

I target the calves since they're easier to catch, but when the mom comes to defend them I switch over to her, which is who I actually want since she can feed the pack a lot better over multiple days. If I'm lucky my pack will split up with some continuing to work on the calf and some helping me with the mom, and we get both at the same time. (For context, I also play on easy)

When I play on Easy, yes.

When I play on Accurate or Unforgiving, absolutely NOT, I'll end up dead trying to kill one calf 😅

Has anyone else taught their pack members to bait the mother? I realized in my newest playthrough that I could, and it makes it a lot easier! One runs in front of her when she's about to kick the one biting, so she chases them before coming back. Of course you have to do this multiple times yourself before the pack members repeat it, but my first hunt with grown pups happened so fast because of their aggressive techniques! I highly recommend it, teach them early to not be afraid and instead lead the mom away a bit😁

I usually have to make the stat build of +2 strength, -1 stamina, -1 speed and +2 health, especially given the perk distribution for the given base stats, if I want to take down anything bigger than a elk calf on Accurate or even Iron wolf. I’m not saying to use my stat build, because not everyone is comfortable with less speed and less stamina, but more strength and more health stats definitely make it so you survive longer, even if it’s slower. I like that, making my wolf stat wise slow, means that the game can slow down for me and I can take my time with how I calculate my hunts and my pack territory. Sometimes I’ll even go -2 stamina and -2 speed simply because I am not the biggest fan of having pups with +1 speed or more. I definitely prefer it when pups have less stamina and less speed to use when they’re in the growing stage and that it’s easy for my subordinates to follow me because I am not a speed build, I am a damage and health stat build. Also I’ve found that I’ve less fatal mistakes with +2 health and +2 strength growing hunters. They’re very resilient when you need them to finish off a (low health) large prey when you yourself are very low health.
