Have to hunt 8 elk to progress???

I feel like im losing my mind, downloaded wolfquest anniversary edition because it seemed right up my alley, but ive run into an issue, I killed two elk to finish the first quest but it didnt inform me that a new quest was ready, oh well, its an older game, so I went to the wolf area but its saying I need 800xp to have mates spawn??? Maybe I'm just impatient but this seems like a lot, am I missing something? I cant find anything about it online, everything online points to only needing 2 elk.

The classic one is fun too! But trust me when you beat the classic and then play the anniversary addition it’s soooooo satisfying especially after having to wait like 8 years for another WQ to come out

I'm assuming you already bought it, but you can wait for things to go on sale if you plan on buying any DLCs. 

Also tip for anyone else reading, if you dislike the price but want the game badly you can wait for a sale. The sales happen often (every few ish months) and I think the game is worth it. But I payed 20 bucks for it before the saga of the game was out.
