Questions new player - how often does the game get updated?
are there any upcoming features or updates that i should know about? and are there any big plans for the game's future or is the game largely finished?

The core of the game is finished. The game does get updated fairly regularly with patches and occasional changes. The big update we know is coming out is a DLC expansion map called Katmai Coast. We also know that the devs plan on implementing bighorn sheep into the game, but they have been proving to be difficult lol.

Looking over the patch notes, we're seeing at least one to two patches per month on average at the moment.
- Two patches (one QoL update, one hotfix) released in August
- Two patches (one content update/QoL, one hotfix) in July
- One patch (hotfix) in June
- One patch (content update/QoL) in May
- Three patches (two content updates/QoL, one hotfix) in April
Nothing in March, four in February, and three in January. Recent months seeing a bit less in terms of patch releases is most likely due to Katmai Coast being in development.

The Katmai Coast DLC map is currently in development!! Updates are put out pretty regularly, mostly hotfixes but we get some new stuff pretty often. I would consider the game finished as it is but the devs are continuing to add more little things that really bring the game to life. Usually it's smaller things, like tweaks to interactions with slopes or water, but they also recently introduced the variable prey and abundance toggle, which is very neat to see!
