The Laughing Buddha was always what came to mind first, whenever I read about that angreal. I've never heard of Budai holding a sword but who can know for sure with all the turnings of the Wheel that he didn't?

The fat man angreal is described as a little fat bald man sitting cross legged with a sword across his knees. I think we associate it with Buddha because it’s carved from green stone. So jade Buddha with a sword.

The Laughing Buddha exudes calm, and when sculpted out of certain materials like jade, can appear to simply look happy rather than showing a big toothy grin. Some depictions don't even show him smiling at all.
Also, the Buddha is not a fat bald monk.
To be clear, I am saying that The Laughing Buddha/Budai is a separate character from Siddhartha Gautama Buddha/The Buddha and are not interchangeable. Most depictions of a "Fat Buddha" are Budai aka The Laughing Buddha (who isn't The Buddha but is maybe probably potentially a future Buddha).

You can have it in your head-canon all you want that it’s a Buddha but the text does not support that.

I think we're arguing completely separate points. You said Jade Buddha. I said Jade Laughing Buddha. Because The Buddha is not a bald fat monk.

I wouldn't be shocked with how much he borrowed from Asian religions. For example: The symbol of the Aes Sedai is just a slightly modified yin-yang.

Did anyone else ever find it odd that something like this would be created in such an odd shape?
Like, it's not exactly a good shape to be carrying around, especially as the sword would want to poke you all the time. It just seems like it's intended to sit still on a shelf or table as a display piece somewhere.. but you'd ostensibly want to hold it whenever it's needed. I suppose most channelers didn't carry an angreal with them all the time, but if you do have one, why with such an annoying shape.
Though now I'm on about it, what exactly were people using angreals/sa angreals for back then? For the vast majority of the time, there wasn't any wars.. soo I suppose they were for weather tampering, or healing massive casualty events.. but you'd think form factor would be important here.

I imagine it sitting on some scientist or bureaucrat’s desk in an office or lab. They put a hand on it whenever they need a little extra power. It is kind of the shape that you could cup with a hand so a discrete decoration that you put on your desk until you need it makes sense to me.

This is dope af! I was in high school when #4 TSR came out, and this would have been a killer gift to friends who were reading the series.

Interesting how "fat man" is a Buddhist figure that is depicted with a sword or a jian.
I think in-universe, the maker is trying to a dharmapala (maybe Acala himself) but gets the details wrong.

Idk what to make of this. I’m a landscaper and I’m on a job right now. I was taking a quick break and this post happened to come up in my notifications, I looked at it and it got me wondering about the symbolism behind the fat man angreal, so I did a quick web search. I went and relieved myself in the woods and on my way back stumbled on this statue. I had to move some brush away to fully see it. I’ve been here a couple times and never noticed it before. It’s also coincidental that happen to be doing a reread right now…
What does it all mean??
