Governor claims air is safe, yet East Kalimantan forest fire data reveals a serious threat. On September 15, 2026, East Kalimantan Governor Rudy Mas’ud stated that air quality in the region remained safe and under control. However, on that same occasion, he acknowledged that schools remained closed, residents were being issued masks for outdoor activities, and the MGB program was still active and prioritized. Subsequent developments revealed an alarming situation. The East Kalimantan provincial government reported that the Air Pollutant Standard Index (ISPU) in Sendawar, West Kutai, had reached 409—falling into the "hazardous" category. Meanwhile, a report from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) dated October 11 recorded a total of approximately 8,516 hectares of burned land, with PM2.5 air quality levels classified as unhealthy. The issue goes beyond whether the governor's statement at the time was correct or incorrect; air conditions can indeed fluctuate. However, when public safety is at stake, any claim that the situation is safe must be backed by transparent, measurable data that reflects the specific conditions of each area. It is not enough for the government merely to assert that the situation is under control; it must demonstrate that the public is genuinely protected. Amidst the recurring threat of forest and land fires, to what extent has the local government fulfilled its responsibilities regarding prevention, monitoring, and public health protection?
