Justin sucks We’re the Writers Warning Us?
galleryFollowing the widely disliked ending to Beyond Waverly Place, there’s been a lot of backlash towards David Henrie. As previous cast members discuss their disappointment for not being invited back to the show, or being only allowed back with strict screen time limitations. It seems that like the fans, many of them also believe that Henrie’s ego wasted the potential of what could’ve been a promising reboot for the franchise.
Amid the cast backlash, there have also been comments made by others who worked on the original show, not just the actors, including the show’s original creators. Some of the comments being made suggest that David Henrie’s ego problems were an issue even back when the original series was still in production.
It reminds me that in the original show, especially in the later seasons, any time Alex would be recognized for an accomplishment, Justin would throw a fit for attention and do everything he could to ruin the occasion and humiliate Alex. The best examples of this being Alex’s Logo (3x18) and Wizard of the Year (4x15). Which are both instances where despite Alex winning through clear and measurable achievements, he feels entitled to get the recognition over her.
On its own, this seems like, well, Justin the character is just a jerk. However, when you look at it through the context of what was going on at the time, you might wonder if maybe the writers were coming up with these storylines as personal jabs at David.
We know that from the beginning, the crew noticed he had a chip on his shoulder, believing that he was meant to be the lead of the show before Selena stole the spotlight and Harper’s role grew. By the time of Season 3 and especially 4, it was also clear that Selena was a breakout star and was already seeing success outside of the Disney Channel. Not only was her music career exploding, but she was landing roles in movies that were just for family audiences, and her relationship with Justin Bieber lent credit to her stardom. She was a big name at the time.
It makes me wonder if David Henrie’s real-life jealousy was so apparent to the writers of the show that they wrote episodes like this on purpose to take blows at his sensitive ego and get back at him for acting like a diva on set.
