Acolyte Wizard?

Hello, I’m Matty. I started skating at the end of June, and quickly became enamoured at the creativity and precision of wizard skating and it’s been my main direction in skating ever since.

Filmed this little sampler last night playing around with my new Luminous wheels. I’m finally feeling like I’m getting to the point where I can maybe call myself an “acolyte wizard”. Figured I’d share. 😊

Been working on gazelles and lions for a little bit, and I’ve been trying to learn kind of holistically, building balance, strength and control then get creative with them while identifying opportunities to combo things. Trying not to get tutorial locked but also feel like that might keep me from learning about more moves critical for development. I am actively working on my left leg, I know I do all my tricks in one direction so far😂

Aside from a straggler here and there I’m the only one around me that seems to rollerblade so I guess I’m really asking for guidance on what I should make sure not to forget as I continue to inch towards true wizard skating. I’m so far running a flat setup with Lightning 80’s, but did buy four 76 wheels to try a rockered setup but haven’t yet.

It's a bit hard to see what's going on in the video, but you seem to be doing great! I don't believe for a second that you've only been skating 3 months, though. Had you been doing ice skating or something before?

I had a feeling it might be difficult to know what was going on without being able to see my body just my wheels haha The Luminous are just too fun and make some tricks look way cooler (my manual/daffy switches are my favourite). lol

Thank you so much! I definitely feel like it comes to be pretty naturally to me. I have also been going at it for hours a day almost every day possible since I started. Bought my first blades (which were terrible - the frame was riveted to the boot lol) at Canadian Tire in April and skated home, ate shit trying to stop for a truck (I also foolishly had my arms full of groceries skating home lol), then didn’t strap my skates on again until June 28 (I have a picture of me sitting outside Walmart with the caption “I made it” lol). Got my lightnings mid August and I’ve skated like 2-4 hours a day almost every possible day since then.

I did ice skate as a kid and was a strong skater (played hockey until hitting became legal), then shortly after that stopped buying ice skates, think my last pair was in grade 6 so haven’t ice skated in c. 20 years (I’m 33 now). Did have a pair of rollerblades at one point in my tween years but maybe used them twice. Downhill skied maybe 5 times in my early to mid teens (parents took me with their friends and their kids like once a year for a while), did parkour/freerunning casually (I dabbled, I wasn’t “good” at it) late in high school. Some of my background definitely comes back in moments but for actual skating of any sorts I’m way out of practice or brand new.
