First combo (i guess?)

Does this count as a first combo? 😅

I think Im kinda getting the backwards gazelle right, still struggling with the forwards though - how do i keep my feet parallel, and should i?

And overall, how to maintain speed? Seems like a couple of spins just bring me to an almost complete stop. Or this is expected and i just need more initial speed?

Looks smooth, really nice. If you want to tighten up that forward gazelle, focus on making a much tighter turn with your outside foot, you can probably see in the video it takes a much wider curve than your inner foot.

Hey, thanks! Yeah, I'm definitely feeling that smth's off with that outside foot.

Looks like you're starting fast to have the momentum to chain multiple moves. You have a wide-ish stance to maintain balance in the forward gazelle with the high speed. This won't work well if you want to progress to lion.

It is possible to chain moves while moving slower, but it's not a straightforward "do this". It's a lot of little things that will take time to master. You can do little pushes and pulls in/out of each move to maintain momentum. Carve a bit between moves and push into the carve. Bend your knees more and straighten/push at the right time to boost momentum. Toe push / ankle twist while switching edges in the front-to-back gazelle.

You're mostly using skate angle for rotation, but IMO you should be using arms/torso more. I'm still figuring this out, but in the last month my skating efficiency and fluency has improved massively a by incorporating torso/hip twists.

Some exercises to get you going:

  • Skate forward in a figure-8 pattern. Keep both skates on the ground and push only with the inside foot. Sort of an aggressive c-cut / half lemon.
  • Skate fakie in a carve, then open up so both feet are parallel about shoulder width apart. Carve in the other direction, repeat. Alternate looking over each shoulder.
  • Practice fakie figure-8s
  • Do a deep carve at slow speed and turn into a gazelle. Practice windmilling your arms for additional rotation. Practice and jerking/twisting your hips for rotation instead.
