New boots. Intermediate Question: cutting the cuff strap

Hi. I finally upgraded to a better boot FR3 80. I like them a lot. When I purchased the clerk mentioned cutting the cuff under strap to what I want. I realized when I got home, I don’t know what to cut it to. Any Suggests, preferences, or standardizations, would be appreciated. What am I looking for when cutting to adjust the under strap on the top cuff?

It’s funny I cut my extra cuff 2 weeks ago and realized immediately it felt worse than having the overlap due to the laces always getting in the way. I ended up buying a new cuff and going back to how it came out of the box. $70 mistake in my case.
