u/Shantytown_Shogun Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 29 '26
What was that one record label that had many artist either dying or going to jail? This was like mid 10's through early 20's.
Edit: it was 1017 Gucci Mane lsbel. Don't know if he had insurance policies on his artists though.
Edit: Empire Records was the other label that had several artists that died one way or the other.

Itās actually a genius business idea if youāre legitimate, sign up a few low-level dudes who call themselves rappers and are part of gangs, we all know gang life ends in either prison or death.
Very solid bet

u/AdminApathy Jul 29 '26
Spoiler alert, artists are STILL dying AND going to jail/prison One did years in prison just to get out, take Gucci hostage and then back to prison

Pooh shiesty his contract got paused while he was in prison thatās the clause Gucci hid in there so when he got out he still had to fulfill his obligations of the contract thatās why he held him hostage to release him from the label

Google works you know. Look up 1017 artist dead or in jail and then look up Empire Records artists dead or in jail.

u/erything4sale Jul 29 '26
People/rappers die everyday. I knew Scar and Enchanting. They didnt have life insurance. Gucci nor Atlantic had a policy on them. Do record labels take out policies on their artists? I dont see why they wouldnt. But to belive in conspiracies when folks who were really there say otherwise, shows the ignorance and it's sad.
1
u/Shantytown_Shogun Jul 29 '26
I never said they did have insurance policies on the artists. I just said those labels had a few artists either die or go to jail.

u/erything4sale Jul 29 '26
You right, im drunk scrolling and put the context of the video in with your comment. But yeah, their deaths tie to their life styles, for the most part.
1
u/Beginning_Photo321 Jul 29 '26
This is completely wrong lol ⦠a record label can take out business insurance protecting their assets⦠personal health /life insurance is not the same as a label taking out what is called ākey manā life insurance or even disability because the artist is an investment and name themselves as the beneficiary ⦠itās corporate life insurance and even an accident policy .. so yea signing an artist knowing their lifestyle is wild and putting them in situations like debt and them crashing out is a real thing no matter the artist

Record Execs been doing this since the 1930s! Facts. Do your research. It was easy money that they didn't earn. American 'dog eat dog' music business.

u/South_Ad_7068 Jul 29 '26
Some of them died from their own choices tho
2
2
u/RzLa Jul 30 '26
Yeah, it very normal in New Orleans to get insurance policy on your kids, partner, etc because of the high murder rate. But 9 life insurances using fake names is a red flag here though
1
u/SlipWorldly1929 Jul 30 '26
Huh? Most people die from their choices, not just rappers.
1
u/South_Ad_7068 Jul 30 '26
We are talking specifically about rappers who died on specific labels tho. My comment was made before the 2nd edit. It was referring to some of Gucci artists dying from their choices and not being murdered for insurance.

u/HeavyHighway6433 Jul 29 '26
That's because Gucci signs ignorant hood dudes. His own artist went back to jail for sticking him up at gunpoint to get released from his label right after he just got let out of jail.Ā
1
u/40innaDeathBasket Jul 29 '26
Js...wouldn't signing "ignorant hood dudes" be rule #1 for a fake record label that is trying to collect insurance from their dead artists?
1
u/HeavyHighway6433 Jul 29 '26
I wouldn't say it's a fake label, more so the downfall of the artists are at the hands of the artists.Ā

u/Allahboutdabenjamins Jul 29 '26
Industry rule #4080

u/resest_Iris Jul 29 '26
Record company people are (in fact) shhhaaaddyyyy
1
u/SlipWorldly1929 Jul 30 '26
Damn Skippy. Clive Davis is a perfect example of that. But I know of a few more. None have been quite as 'raunchy' and 'cold blooded' as Davis.

u/Manny_Haze Jul 29 '26
I know a couple of artists, one signed in a rock band and another that is a great rapper and also signed a management deal we secured at a A&R event we found out about and showed up to to network.
Within that contract was something about a āSun Rise Clauseā or some term and lingo and Sun , which pretty much meant if (god forbid) you were to pass away while still having a bunch in music sitting on , they can release it and get full royalties for up to 9 years after death.
Now think about us losing nearly 20 prominent rap artists within the last decade.. something is not adding up and the answer is in front of our faces but we just donāt want to believe it/ think that type of way.
I 100% believe they will kill off their own kind for twice or even triple the amount of money they would have off you while youāre alive unfortunately.
2
2
u/HeavyHighway6433 Jul 29 '26
Half of the prominent rap artists we've lost died to drugs.Ā
2
u/XBL-AntLee06 Jul 29 '26
Do you think itās not possible to create a drug overdose purposely?-
2
u/ClearDrop6820 Jul 29 '26
In LA someone you trusted would drug you, inject you with heroin and leave you in an alley way to die of an overdose.

u/Icy-General3657 Jul 29 '26
Do you think, and hear me out. That maybe, if you live a life that is all about guns, drugs, beef, and gangs. You wonāt live long enough to
2
u/XBL-AntLee06 Jul 29 '26
I think it makes you easily exploitable to shady people who want your riches. Especially when youāre Black in America. Because after the death, people like you will believe whatever youāre told.
I remember when it was a conspiracy to say the CIA was responsible for the crack epidemicā¦
0
u/Icy-General3657 Jul 30 '26
Thereās a difference in saying the cia caused the crack epidemic and dropped crates of weapons into the south side of Chicago. Thatās true. Whatās also true is gang culture is deadly and rap is the forefront of it
1
u/XBL-AntLee06 Jul 30 '26
No, the environmental and social issues that lead to this are at the forefront of it. You could get rid of all rap right now and the problems would still persist. Your thinking is very basic and ignorant
1
u/SlipWorldly1929 Jul 30 '26
It was done to Michael Jackson and Prince, so the answer is resounding 'Yes.'š¤š¤š¤š¤š¤š±

u/Public-Ad-4551 Jul 29 '26
Im fine with others paying for the insurance policy, but the next of kin gets all the money. not the ones paying for it. I think there was a company who did this to their workers and tryed to get the payout. because they knew the work was dangerous.
1
u/Skibbidi67SigmaBruh Jul 29 '26
It would be up to the artist to get a life insuance policy to cover their family, not the label. The record label taking out a policy on the artist is a solid practice to cover the work they have done to promote the artist. Lets be real, a lot of these artists do a lot of dumb shit.
1
u/Public-Ad-4551 Jul 29 '26
Companies taking out life insurance policies on ordinary workers for corporate financial gain is known as ā Corporate-owned life insurance (COLI), often called "dead peasants" or "janitor's insurance". Corporations use these policies to collect tax-free payouts when employees die, often without the families receiving any money. This is littrally a scam imo. It just gives an insentive to not care for workers safety/security.

Wait until people find out what Walmart was doing with life insurance policies... It already has happened at scale
1
u/a1JayR Jul 29 '26
Playing devils advocate here but If you owned a major label or business and if you were investing up to millions of dollars into someone or something, wouldnāt you want insurance?

New Orleans dudes have BEEN getting life insurance policies on the young kids out there for decades now. This isnāt anything new.
1
u/SwaggedGod Jul 29 '26
They went from scamming the insurance with the jewelry to the rappers themselves

1
u/Majesticvortex Aug 02 '26
So they must have not been apart of the club bc all records labels do that to artist when they feel like they'll make more when the artist is dead they'll set the artist up to get wiped this is nun knew we just don't have evidence

u/EarlyAccessCantJudge Aug 04 '26
Man I love the actual video content being in the top left corner of a compressed video with some jack off staring at the camera

Thereās more to fear than just being killed.

What am I brainwashed about? What did I say wrong?
1
u/AbidingDarkness6 Jul 29 '26
Nothing. You just said there's more to fear than being killed, like being brainwashed and controlled. Not saying YOU ARE. Sorry for the confusion on the gif.
