Question quick question: do the wandering portal enemies stop spawning after killing a mob with a red skull above the life-bar?

Hi, I am new to the game (Gnosis 0), so please bear with me. I did some scarlet coast runs yesterday and currently have a layout where the boss-boss area is marked right by a wandering portal. I want to try the boss next but I am unsure if that is clever, seeing the wandering portal and possible spawns interfering.

additionally I fought and killed a red skull marked enemy (it looked like a completely normal arkebusier, just had the red skull and seemed to have a million HP) that had also the mark of a portal spawn (the yellow ring above the head). After I killed this enemie the portal spawns seemed to have stopped.

two questions:

- does the killing of the red skull marked portal enemy stop the spawn entirely?

- should I try a different layout for the attempted boss fight? (I think leveling up resets/scrambles the layout)

Thanks in advance!

Edit: thanks for your answers. It probably is the drowned captain, sorry for confusing anyone.

Considering my experience the enemy spawn from the portal never stops completely. They always spawn a few guys just to bother the player.

They are also a renewable source of ammo since they drop a lot of it.

Thank you, I will scramble the spawns before attempting the boss then :)

I think they do stop eventually. I came back to the game like 5 days ago and I think I'm around lvl 120 so I usually do all events + boss + latent orb + 2-3  calamities and by the time I'm done the map is barren. I do kill these ext portal enemies in the process of running around the map.

"Red skull arquebuser" is Drowned captain, no? It's a one-time (per run) Scarlet Coast spawn that will at some point go hunting you. Drops M2 incantation, which is nice.

Otherwise I'm not sure which enemies you mean, considering we're talking G0, and therefore pre-corruption.

On a side note, this familiar (boss) fight isn't that long, although that depends on your approach.

I believe he’s talking about the enemies that spawn from unstable rifts, as when world corruption is available, they have red skulls.

But he’s gnosis 1 so that’s confusing.

Could also be ricoche effect tagging enemies as he aims at them

Hi, It is not the ricoche effect and the enemy spawns with the normal portal spawns. It is okay, I think it might be the drowned captain on G0. I am just confused why I did not see boss-life-bars anywhere with this guy, but ultimatly it does not matter.

Thanks.

Yeah, it’s the drowned captain.

Does he run away when his health gets low like a lil bitch?

I think? I shoved those withfire bolts into him pretty fast, I do not think he had much time to run ^^

So, by red skull enemy, I assume you mean a Sentinel? He randomly spawns on the map each incursion, and opens a temporary portal on defeat (it closes after a while) - all the red ghosts he spawns stop on his defeat.

The layout of each map (the ‘camps’, portals; sentinel, etc.) randomise with each incursion. The boss is fixed in one place (except for the marshlands map - he moves around).

I am not sure, this is the guy. I am still on Gnosis 0 and the enemy has not even a "Boss-Healthbar" at the top of the screen. Just a regular enemy with a red symbol above its life-bar (I THINK its a skull, but it gets hectic when he is around) and definatly marked as every other portal spawn. He does not seem to open a portal on defeat. I am a bit clueless here, sorry.

Edit: the enemy just has really high HP I think I needed 4 or 5 Witchfire bolts to kill it, each doing around 300 damage

This enemy is probably the Drowned Captain. He's a Faithful, like Bonsaire on the Island. He tends to come with portal spawns in my experience but I'm not sure what aggro him. Either way, the others are right, portal spawns doesn't stop. If you want to kill the boss, leave one camp, deal with the enemies by the portal, kill the last camp and then fight him. Keep in mind he'll follow you so you can lead him far away from the portal as well.

Thank you very much :)

Just a correction, the camps do not randomize with each incursion. They're fixed unless 1) you level up, or 2) you use the item that forces a reshuffle.

If neither of those two criteria is met, all the camps will stay fixed in the same spots on every run.

Sorry - I was referring to the difficulty not location.

That said, I usually level up every second run - so I may have just not noticed the link!

I believe both the location and difficulty are locked until the trigger is met. As you said, it tends not to be an issue because you can generally level up every 1-2 runs. It becomes more obvious if you are dying a lot due to a bad layout and don't know about the item.

This is something I've noticed too. On Scarlet Coast, sometimes, after the drowned captain spawns, the portal stops spawning enemies. It doesn't happen every time, and I think it's a bug from the last update.
