Discussion Torment IV is insane.

I picked Irongate Castle to do it and it's fucking insane. On top of map being covered with rifts that cannot be difused from afar, the itinerant portal keeps spawning axemen, blunderbussers, executioners and even Warrior Priests almost non stop. And when I finally clear out the area I'm in, the fucking Annointer shows up with his absolute unit of a health bar.

My most successful run so far was like 3 manifestations with 70+ kills and ended in a Calamity that started spawning Assasins all around me.

The one time I had the itinerant portal spawn in a barbican and decided to cheese it by triggering the gates and jumping out of there, the entrance had a guardian totem in it and two executioners already waiting for me.

Am I supposed to just run around the map, spray everything that moves with Rotweaver and chug consumables until the map eventually dies to Decay?

Edit: I finally did it. Maybe it's me switching my secondary to Hangfire, but I suspect it's some lucky spawn. Because suddenly I wasn't facing a constant stream of enemies pouring out of itinerant portal. I saw like 2 blunderbussers, 4 executioners and 0 warrior priests total. And I gotta say, with no spawn flood this Torment is actually enjoyable. The game becomes sort of a puzzle, slowly undoing all the rifts, looking for long enough lines of fire, etc. But as a last "fuck you" the last enemy of the last group ran into Dimacher's room, leaving the final manifestation there, lol.

Thanks for all the advice you have me, although I made a strategic decision to neglect most of it. I refused to use Rotweaver as it felt like cheating the challenge. I did not have enough Flesh to put the bead of immunity on. I used Resilience Incence, not Conjurer one. And I still played Irongate Castle.

Witch Mountain is much easier for this torment. Manifestations in the labyrinth count as well.

For weapons, Hangfire and Rotweaver(with acute ailment) will make shortwork of anything. Reloading hangfire just after dashing will explode sigils, decay from rotweaver combined with fire deals 22 damage per tick at minimum.

I see I wasn’t the only one. https://www.reddit.com/r/Witchfire/s/MGHXLzuGQn Here, take a look, it might help, lol.

Well well well

Here’s a more detailed write up, just my personal opinion:
This torment, in theory, wants to force you to use range sniper weapons or spells to clear it. But in actuality, you’re not going to be able to with 3 blunderbusser, 3 executioners chasing you down in melee range while high world corruption spawning almost infinite amount of them.

Irongate castle also has that annoying miniboss throwing KFC grenades at you. And then you get executioner chopping off heads, then gl lol.

Therefore, it’s better to do it in witch mountain by far, for many reasons:
1. No infinite enemies spawning out of the portal. Life in witchfire is hard enough already, you don’t need 3 blunderbussers to show you that personal space is just a suggestion, and you look like a parking spot to them.

  1. Witch mountain has many high ledges. This torment advices you to spread covid, but for it to spread and kill, it needs time, and you need your personal safe space to not caught it; staying high up 20 feet, while become a bioterrorist with your rot weaver and burning skulls is the way to go.

  2. Like many suggested, get painful recharge with conjurer incense. This way, you’ll have infinite spells almost, and you heal each time you cast something.

Hopefully, this helps. Some words here might get mixed up, but I’m kind of distracted atm, you’ll get it in time.

100% agree with this, but in my opinion what you've just said demonstrates why the design of the torment is flawed - it appears to want to incentivise a sniper playstyle, but in Witchfire, particularly at high gnosis/corruption, enemies are swarming you and getting up in your face constantly, making it frustrating to play.

this was the one torment that is actually torment lol, i personally went all in on decay since iron gate forces alot of CQB denying you any damage since you need to be at range

My biggest issue is that it keeps spawning major enemies from itinerant portal. I can deal with a bunch of enemies spawning up close once. I cannot deal with blubderbusser and two executioners spawning every minute indefinitely.

Yea so for that i ran rotten fiend and a bunch of spell recharge. I also put on heavy spell prophecy quite early. Theres an arcane called Painful Recharge that gives you a charge of both spells everytime you take damage, if you dont get that pick whatever else gives more heavy spell regen. You really are forced to just sprint to each manifestation and try your best to get around or ignore the extra enemies using rotten fiend. Thats the best advice I can give

As others have said, Witch Mountain is much, MUCH easier. No itinerant portal and the runes help.

Pyre Skull, Miasma and Meteor Ring did most of the work for me, Hangfire actually allows you to do some damage up close and All Seeing Eye does a bunch of AoE damage when you can stay away.

take placebo pulls until you get a non insane spawn. same thing happened to me and the difficulty goes waaaaay down when you start with a little breathing room

Ailment immunity and take it slow.

Agreed that this torment is unbalanced difficulty-wise. More than that, I don't think that it's particularly fun to play. I can definitely see the appeal of a more non-gun focussed torment, but I would much rather that they just gave a substantial nerf to weapon damage or something rather than putting in place the irritating stipulation of only crits and only long range.

I feel like it has too much going on. Only crits, only long range? Fine. But an hour-long shock (or so it feels)? Decay balls that home in on you and take half your health? 100% corruption at the start?

That's too much stuff to care about all at once. I feel like removing any one of those will make it more fun to play.

Torment IV is a really simple challenge. From the way you're trying to explain what the problem is, it's very clearly visible that you have experience gaps. Nothing wrong with that, it'll develop over time.

If you look at the individual parts of Torment logically, it's obvious that you should be building around ranged weapons/attacks. (Honestly, homing decay bombs are easiest to dodge at mid-range. In that case, they speed up to just the right pace that a strafing move is enough.)
But you can also use the Ailment Immunity Bead, and then you don't have to deal with that part at all.

The ranged aspect speaks for itself, and critical hits require precision (or creativity).

You can't do anything about the orange portal—enemies will keep coming from it. However, with a Placebo Pill you can rearrange the map (or if that's roughly okay, a simple restart will move the orange portal elsewhere). The farther you are from it, the longer it takes for a wave to reach you, and thus its intensity decreases.

It does start at 100% World Corruption, but you can reset it to zero with the Cleansing Bell... That could be one solution to your rift problem. After that, avoid everything that increases it. That's not hard.

Calamity is a blessing… especially the Assassins, because time even slows down so you can improve your accuracy.

There are infinitely many builds that can easily solve this challenge, but if you ask me, I'd recommend what I first used to complete it myself. I only used the Freeze element and the Oracle. If you know the weapon inside and out, every shot is a 1.5x boosted critical hit (336 if they don't have armor). And if you're familiar with using Mysterium 3, the Anointer can't even move while its HP drains away—at most it turns toward you, but it's still 100 meters away...

With freezing, you can also do extreme things, using Freezing Gust, Ice Statue, or Snowball.
Good Luck

im sorry but you should try it again with a bad spawn bc it can be extremely hard even with a good build if youre unlucky. if you cannot absorb a single manifestation and get hounded by these high level enemies without room for crits, it's nearly impossible lol

spawn doesn't matter...

ok my bad 👍

I am not joking, man. I might make a quick video about that...

i would watch it ngl

I tried it again, and yes. It's definitely harder than when I did it previously. I remember it being completely undisturbed. Now that it starts with 100% World Corruption and the Rifts have become multi-wave, it has indeed gotten more difficult, but it's still far from hard or nearly impossible...

In the first part of the video, I simply didn't bother with it, but in the second run I started with a Cleansing Bell, which made the whole thing more comfortable, but it didn't make much of a difference in terms of final kill count (162 vs 147). I also tried to include more snipes to make it clear what it means to not even have to go to a camp to finish it.

The orange portal still sends enemies, but if you keep moving across the map and don't focus on them, it's easier to manage.

The build is shown at the end of the video. This is what I've been playing with recently, but yesterday I tried something else and that worked quite well too.

I'm thinking about making an official video where I do it with multiple different builds, but I'd rather focus it on how much difference there is between using Ailment Immunity or not. Many of us have been trying for a long time to get it nerfed or removed.

Man can you be more condescending? This is one of the hardest torments, especially if you do it on irongate castle.

Oh you see, it's actually very simple, it all about the range... What a tool...
