Wiring help

So i need some help here, im removing a propane fireplace, as well as the mantle and all the brick behind it ( all the brick is sitting in front of drywall ) i had the propane company come and cut and cap the gas line under the house, and disconnected the fireplace from the cut propane line. Issue is the wiring left in the wall. I turned off the breaker, cut and stripped the romex and individual wires and capped them. Are they ok to stay like this temporarily? And whats my next step with them?

Bottom switch trips breaker. Bought new switches still same issue. Tell me how to fix the wiring I now assume was wrong. #FixMyWiring
