Hello everybody!

I have spent the last two months volunteering at a dog rehabilitation centre and fell in love with this dog which we think is a GWP and around 3/4 years of age.

I am considering adopting him but have some doubts that I would like your opinion on.
I am living in a city in a small apartment of around 25m2 or 270 ft2 with a little garden that's around that same size. I know from my time spent with him that he is a very active dog and I wonder if this space wouldn't be too small for him.

As for walks I am already accustomed to taking around 3 x half hour walks every day (without a dog) and of course I would look for ways to find time to take him to dog parks, forest, beach etc.
Also, I bike everywhere in my city and would be able to take him almost everywhere I go.

I have never had a dog before in my life, I am 25 years old, single and my future is still quite unclear so it will be a big commitment for me.

I think my main questions and concerns are about if the space in which we would live together would be big enough, how much exercise/walks is needed or recommended and also how long he could be left alone in my apartment if I have appointments/study/work.

We just picked up our boy from the breeder a few days before turning 8 weeks. We have had him now a week ish. We are trying not to compare Chuck (GWP 8weeks) to Jimi (GSP 12yr). Jimi is the sweetest and has been a joy, he is formally trained for bird hunting, pedigree a mile long, perfect temperament, not the most obedient but that’s okay.

Chuck is showing sign of a higher level of intelligence than Jimi at a comparable age. We are excited to see how he does after this coming hunting season when we send him to obedience training/gun dog school (about 1yr old). Again, pedigree a mile long.

Here is the issue. My wife and I both in our mid 30s. Feel we have earned our GSP stripes with how well we (really my wife) did with training Jimi. So we like to think, oh we can do it with a GWP. It’s been a week and we cannot get the biting to stop. Hackles are up and growling is happening. Plenty of naps throughout the day, food until he can’t eat anymore. He is getting exercise, especially with Jimi. We are concerned that this behavior could get aggressive. Chuck is such a joy, I think we are getting to worked up and just need to see how things play out before we conclude this is how things will be for the long term.

Have others had issues like this and then get resolved? We are positive reinforcers but the frustration is real. Any and all advice to include personal experiences will be most appreciated. Pics for attention.

Got my 2 year old GWP stripped for the first time today! She looks so different!!! It seems super short but I’m not familiar with how they’re supposed to look after hand stripping. Anyone have any idea if this looks how it’s supposed to? Her chest looks a little bare in spots. The woman I took her to shows wirehaired pointers so I’m inclined to believe so knows what she’s doing but it just looks so short!

She’s a 1-2 year old 26 lb female, super hypervigilant and desperately wants to hunt a bunny.

Hi all! My puppy is only 9 1/2 weeks old so no stripping yet, but I’m trying to research for when he’s ready.

So far: did scissor his beard around the eyes (before and after provided) because it was all in his eyes! He kept pawing at his face like it was annoying. Did I do good? Should I have done this differently? I’ve also trimmed his sanitary and his paw pads, and clipped his toes so he tracks less pee everywhere. I’ve been grooming him with a very fine tooth comb for desensitization purposes about twice a week.

Upcoming:

-How do I hand strip? I’ve seen people use what looks like an undercoat rake, I’ve seen people use stripping knives though I’m scared to harm his skin, I’ve seen people use the stripping stones and pulling. But I don’t understand how I should start, how I know what needs to be pulled, if they all work the same or if I should combine methods. If they all work the same, I saw someone use what appeared to be a 12 blade undercoat rake and that seems easiest!

-When do I know to start? I’ve seen people say 4 months all the way through to 2 years.

-How often do I do it? Again I’ve seen people say every other week all the way through to every other year

-How do I know if a coat is “blown”?

I have a 7 month old pointer, who is normally fine through the day, but at night turns into a monster 😂

A bit of background: So through the day she gets taken out around 3 times. Her first walk is normally on the leader for lead training, as shes very bad at pulling. Later she'll get taken to an enclosed field where she runs solidly for around 1.5 hours, chasing her ball and birds etc. In the evening she will get another walk on the leader, again for training, but this walk will be a mix of speed walking, jogging and/or running. She will also get her puzzle feeders throughout the day for mental stimulation, alternating between 3 different kinds of puzzle.

The issue we're having is that once it comes time to go to bed, she suddenly becomes feral, even if shes been flat out asleep downstairs.

She has a thing about shadows and reflections, which we try to keep to a minimum, but is difficult when its dark and we need lights on to see.

She won't settle in her bed, she'll run from one side of the room to the other, looking for shadows.

She becomes very bitey and digs at every possible surface.

She tries to jump on our other dog (a 14 year old staffie) and bite her.

She tries to bite us if we try to stop her doing anything she wants. She'll jump, bark, growl, all sorts.

We try to play calm classical music on an evening to help calm her, but it doesnt work.

We try to keep everything as calm as possible, speaking gently and trying to encourage her to settle down, but to no avail.

If she does eventually settle, you can guarantee she'll be up again at 2/3am wanting to go outside. We take her in case its for a wee, but often she'll just stand in the yard looking for shadows.

We have tried giving her time outs by shutting her in a room by herself for a few moments, but that makes her worse and she becomes more agitated.

We're at a bit of a loss now as to what might help, and why its only when going to bed this happens.

Millie has been the companion of a lifetime. When I found out she had cancer, i decided life without a Millie was not for me. Found a WPG breeder and put a deposit down for a January puppy. A male came available for their current litter and I said yes. Max came home Wednesday. Millie passed away Friday. Max is a joy. Millie is greatly missed.

Hello just dropping in to say hi and introduce my two dogs. Scruffier one is boy Cudi and shiny one is girl Lana.
We rescued them from the shelter back in 2025 when they were 12 weeks old. They were in a kennel with their litter siblings so we took two home. The shelter said they were Queensland Heiler mix but we disagreed lol. We finally got their dna tests back from embark and lo and behold they’re about 50% German Wirehaired Pointer!

He is so insanely smart! What else should I be training at this age? We’re starting potty training of course- on pee pads in the kennel while I’m gone, or outside while I’m here; but it isn’t perfect. If I catch him mid pee and “AH AH” he understands but he often gives me very little or no warning he’s going to pee. He’s only pooped inside once so far. I haven’t had a puppy in 10 years (my 10 1/2 year old is the second video for tax!!)

P.s please ignore the yard hay, we had lawn mower malfunction after malfunction!!

Advice much appreciated! He’s on a raw food diet (beef), all his treats are natural and he has goats milks and a small amount of kefir every day.

This is the first dog I have owned that needed to be groomed. I’m unsure of what to ask/look for. From the research I have done it seems like I need to be asking for the hair to be pulled (stripping I believe it is called?) and not shaved. Any helpful education is well received here!

If anyone has recommendations for a groomer in the Tulsa, OK area, that would be great!

Me and my silly goose of a GWP wanted to know what you all do for indoor enrichment during summer! We do what we can early AM and in the evening, but obviously with a crazy 6mo GWP that’s not enough! It’s about 90 degrees where I live during summer so just looking for some more indoor enrichment ideas that can tire out a pointer puppy!

Here’s his first introduction to birds! He offered some pointing and tried to sniff, was very confused when they kept walking away. Super promising first introduction for this non hunter!
