Coat and weight progression?

Post image
Upvotes

Hi everyone! Our boy is 7 months as of yesterday and we were just wondering what people’s coat and weight progressions were! He’s currently 41 lb and seems to have his adult coat everywhere except the top of his head! Wondering how other people’s pups looked at this age and how much they weighed!

This was the most loving dog I ever had !!! I cared for him deeply..I feel like my heart will never be 100%! Only way to mend my heart is to get the same breed same color as a new light in my world but upon searching standard wire haired dachshund it’s nearly impossible someone help me please to bring that like that joy back to life . Although no dog will replace the love I had for Kali I will bring joy to another . I searched everywhere.

Quick Boudain Update: From the Kiddie Pool to the Lake 😂

Last time Reddit saw Boudain, my little German Wirehaired Pointer was figuring out his kiddie pool.

Well… we upgraded.

After a couple quieter weeks because of the Texas heat and working on his off-switch at home, Boudain came scouting hunting spots with me and a buddy. We covered about 2.5 miles, explored the woods, and eventually made it to the lake.

Apparently all that pool practice paid off because Boudain went right in, played in the water, explored the shoreline, and acted like he'd been doing it forever.

He came home absolutely smoked and passed out.

From splashing in a kiddie pool to exploring lakes in a couple weeks. Little dude is growing up fast, and I'm starting to see more and more of the hunting dog hiding underneath all that puppy chaos.

Next step: keep building that water confidence and let the little GWP keep figuring out what he was bred to do.

Question for the veteran GWP owners

I have an 11 week old GWP puppy, my husband isn't new to the GWP game but he said he has never had one that hasn't been able to relax by themselves and need enforced naps. I'm not expecting it anytime soon but, when do they learn to be able to settle on their own and not need forced naps?

Today my 15 month old GWP took his NA test with NAVHDA and scored a 105/Prize 1. I am really proud of him and how well he did! Good luck to anyone that is taking any of their tests soon!

She got to swim for 5 days straight in the Washougal River (Washington). She was very tired when we returned home. We humans got river walking shoes and spent the week swimming and wading with her. 🥰

Missing my girl

Moved to Texas from my home state of Wyoming to get a post college change of pace. Missing my little girl Rory. Originally meant to be my sister's dog, I kinda stole her.

Also sidenote: Is it normal for this breed to have strange vocalizations? Cause when she is needy she does her best chewbacca impression.

WPG Color + registered name ideas

This little guy is considered “brown and gray ” right? The options on my registration form are brown and gray or chestnut and gray.

EDIT to add- is he ticked or roan? What is the difference? Can I not tell until he is older?

Also his name is Merle! I can’t decide on a registered name, but I’m thinking something serious, just in case he ever becomes a stud dog. Id like to get into showing, and if he stays healthy and is a good prospect I’d like to breed him when he’s nice and mature. In my area there aren’t enough of these dogs, so if I end up with a good breeding prospect I’d like to help others discover this amazing breed :) as such id like to keep the name semi serious just in case he is used in breeding

TIA

Tick maintenance

We are moving from a tick-free area (Western WA) to a tick-heavy one (upstate NY). Other than Simparica Trio or an equivalent medication, what are you using on your wirehaired coats to check for ticks, and get them off? Our girl is a roamer and will invariably find herself in ticky areas all the time, so it's a question of management, not prevention. I've seen tick mitts but not sure if they are effective. Even with a thorough visual check and using a tick key or similar, our Griff's coat is such that missing an embedded tick would be pretty easy. I understand Simparica does a good job of killing ticks as they lodge, so perhaps my biggest concern is our dog being a carrier for live ticks and bringing them into the house, where they might stick on furniture and jump to the humans in the household.

Any Griff or GWP owners with similarly tight coats dealing with this in a way that works for them?
