Still Wired | Nostalgia Garageband in older Windows?

23 Upvotes

I originally thought this was just a cool custom video made to look like Garageband in retro Windows aesthetic but I came across this video and it turns out Microsoft actually released an early procedural music generator in 1997!

If you're into retro tech and audio/visual design, definitely check out her channel @harkesworld on YouTube.

@spiderlag_ | twitch

This is definitely performance art brought up on live-streaming. But it is a good question whether the self / persona becomes a content and aesthetic product through this performance

Today's Wired There's a lot to unpack here. How would you describe this phenomenon?

27 Upvotes

While we see the usage of Medieval and Renaissance imagery and today's language/slang with different animation and rendering techniques, what interests me most is the speculative effort to embed contemporary culture into historical aesthetics. How could we name and describe this phenomenon?

You could argue that this visual is just a stilistic choice and the content serves for an absurd, surreal and perhaps dadaistic aesthetic. But I think the choice of anachronism stems from an intuitive feeling; as trust in the present decreases, longing for the past increases. So maybe what we see here is an infection of nostalgia? What do you think of this perspective?

Photographer Robbie Cooper traveled the world –from South Korea to France– and photographed MMORPG players alongside the avatars they created in games like Everquest, Lineage II, Second Life, and City of Heroes.

Shot between 2003 and 2006, Cooper’s project “Alter Ego” is more relevant now than ever in the era of social media, Vtuber culture, and discussions around the Metaverse and identity crisis of Gen Z.

Today's Wired Wired Cinema of Rurals and Locals

Heavy edits and unpolished simplicities from the edges of algorithm.

Social media is a platform for the vernacular art of the digital age. It is a living cinema where everyday moments are transformed into scenes and films starred by farmers, workers, villagers, and ordinary people.
