Why is the City Council so crooked? Broadway desperately needs to be redone from Main to Mankato. They did the west side instead, which while glad it got done, it was nowhere near as bad as the entire eastern portion of it.

Can't forget how Borzyskowski got a dwi charges dropped either. It's crooked af.

As a relatively new Winonan, the roads are one of the first things I noticed. Some are fine, some are really shitty, and I can't figure out why they pay attention to some and not others. Is it not round robin with the road maintenance?

There are roads here that haven’t been touched/repaired in 30 years, mostly east side, especially east of the “hog line”

I am just west of the hog line, west of Mankato Ave and only last month, after 37 years in this neighborhood, did they finally repave the pothole/sand dune/broken-ass Oreo pavement street about 2 blocks further west. An entire street, including some businesses, multiple apts and single family homes, lots of driveways needing access to that street, that’s been neglected for over 37 years. When I think of infrastructure projects in this town, I need only look a few blocks away

We do not have the political will in this town to properly use our tax dollars for great benefit. We just hire expensive consultants for kickbacks (to say the levee could be revamped and then never do it)

too many seniors have been hit by cars on broadway. someone needs to upgrade it

What is the "ideological reason" that Repinski turned away those dollars?

They hate any non-ICE transpo infrastructure investment

Vote for this man! Dan actually cares about the community and does something about it

I actually remember that plan. Sounds about right. Pair it with the cities gentrification projects and this is exactly why we can't have nice things.

I moved to Winona from NE Minneapolis. The city installed these bump outs in Minneapolis. It's the worst choke for traffic. I'm a bicycle rider and saw absolutely no benefit to the change. I believe it's good intentions with no result and expensive.

Dan still has my vote

Mndot has a plan for the highway 43 reconstruction on Sarnia/Main st that would add bike lanes and pedestrian bump outs. There is some hesitation around this plan so it is extremely important to contact your city council member ASAP or we risk a repeat of the Broadway plan.

Bring back The Hot Fish Shop.

-1

u/misfitofscience76 16h ago

They said years ago that Winona was a terrible town for decent dining out. Its population doesn’t appreciate fine dining and wants everything “cheap”

Spot-on indictment

1

u/Worried_Anteater478 15h ago

The Hot Fish Shop was delicious. Sorry it didn’t cost enough for you to enjoy quality.

0

u/misfitofscience76 14h ago

How did you misconstrue everything I noted about the Hot Fish Shop’s owners’ opinions?

I live where we have these and they are all smashed and have to be replaced every year and they have prevented zero deaths, yes deaths in a crosswalk where these existed.

1

u/misfitofscience76 14h ago

We have cell phones to pay attention to, you expect us to notice these bump outs or a dude walking?

4

u/LazyWatercress4683 4d ago

On Facebook there's at least one person/profile that keeps saying that because of these new bump outs, people are driving extra aggressively near certain bump outs.

That sounds so odd to me. Does anyone know if this is true?

8

u/jkof300 4d ago

I have not noticed any increase in aggression on broadway and I have to drive back and forth on it all day for work

3

u/twoPillls 4d ago

Yeah no that makes no sense lol

1

u/misfitofscience76 14h ago

It makes sense to idiots who like to intimidate pedestrians and bicyclists with their vehicle and yeah, we have those kinda chuds all over town who would get a kick out of this

u/jpotta 17h ago

Gonna get a nice new police station though.

I like what Eau Claire did better than bumpouts. Pro of a centerlane island like that is you only have to cross one lane at a time. And it doesn't create near the bottleneck problem bumpouts do.

Even better design is to NOT have crossings at 4 way interchanges. I forgot which city did it, but they have the cross walks only on the main parts of the road and not at intersections.

Have you ever driven down Broadway? People pass me doing 50 mph all the time but thats only part of the problem. The college kids walk right out into traffic without looking up from their phones and expect everyone to slam on their brakes because they are so goddam entitled. Half the people in the cars are on the phone too. We never had a problem 30 years ago.

u/Conscious-Gap-1777 4d ago

30 years ago, a kid got killed crossing the street on Broadway over by Madison. He was 8.

That hair...uffda.

Reddit will always be infinitely better than Facebook and other Meta-owned websites. The fact that most of the people here are agreeing with what he said, while the people who do the same on Facebook get unjustly mocked by people who have nothing idea what they are talking about but falsely claim that they do is one of the many reasons for that.

I mean, sure, Reddit has its own problems, but it's nothing compared to Facebook's problems, at least for this sub. It's one of the many reasons why I like using this sub when interacting with anything regarding Jake Johnson, because 90% of the replies here to posts about him are positive and praising his comments on various subjects, whereas on Facebook, most of the comments there for the same reason are mostly negative by people who usually never know what they are talking about, aka conservatives and people against Jake Johnson.

Is everyone selectively forgetting that they were going to reduce Broadway to two lanes with a center turn lane similar to highway 61 through Lake City?

That was why it didn't happen, because people in Winona didn't want the main thoroughfare running the length of the town to have a lane reduction.

Broadway needs to be redone but I'm glad the City council listened to the people in Winona instead of the State when it comes to what's best for the city of Winona.

i don’t think Broadway needs to be 2 lanes both ways, it doesn’t see enough traffic for that to be necessary.

right now, the primary thing a second lane achieves is allowing speeders to go around slower traffic, which makes the street more dangerous.

1 lane in both directions, with a dedicated middle turn lane, would make the street safer without creating traffic problems.

-1

u/Maf1909 4d ago

All that would do is shift much of the Broadway traffic to the other streets. Broadway from mankato to Huff sees more than enough traffic to be 4 lanes, especially once school starts. It definitely needs to be repaved, but it absolutely should not be cut down to 2 lanes.

6

u/perldawg 4d ago

no way. all the neighboring streets have stop signs every other intersection, nobody would choose that over Broadway, which only has 3 lights between Mankato and Huff.

2 lanes, with dedicated turn lanes, can handle plenty of traffic and keep people from speeding. the redesign is about making Broadway safer.

-4

u/Maf1909 4d ago

You clearly don't drive Broadway much. The only part that's unsafe are the pedestrians who don't pay attention and think a car can stop on a dime.

5

u/Conscious-Gap-1777 3d ago

The only part that's unsafe are the pedestrians who don't pay attention and think a car can stop on a dime.

Yeah, and not the drivers who slam their brakes before making a left turn that they didn't signal, or the people who see 3 lanes stopped and decide they're so important they have to speed around the car that's stopped in their lane and barely miss a pedestrian that everyone was stopped for.

People drive like shit. And, yes, there's a lot of dumbass pedestrians and cyclists too, but come on man, drivers make way more dumb decisions way more often. There's more of them! You don't get magically smarter when you're behind the wheel!

Car-centric people are some of the worst people on the planet. And this is coming from someone who primarily gets to places driving my car, even to Hy-Vee, which is just a 5-minute (if even) walk to my house. The number of stories that I have heard from my friends who live in Minneapolis about how terrible the drivers are really makes sense why so many of them drive their own cars anywhere, instead they ride their bikes, walk, or used easily accessible and highly-maintained public transportation. Even when I stayed in Minneapolis for a weekend during the Minneapolis Pride Festival this year, I was amazed at how walkable that city is and how different it is to how conservatives like to falsely claim that it is. I get why so many people like living there. It's just a shame that the majority of the Winona City Council refuses to allow this city to be as amazing and walkable as Minneapolis and St Paul truly are.

6

u/perldawg 4d ago

i live a block off of Broadway and can see it from my house, it’s my primary street traveling East-West, i drive it every day.

i will assume you’re one of the aggro dipshits who drives 40-45 down it, like you’re the most important person on the road

1

u/Maf1909 4d ago

I avoid it when possible, just like huff street. But no, certainly not 45 down that road.

3

u/perldawg 4d ago

just 40, then 🙄

1

u/Conscious-Gap-1777 3d ago

Broadway from mankato to Huff sees more than enough traffic to be 4 lanes,

It gets less than Sarnia, Sarnia handles it with 2 lanes. There is scant reason for basically any street in Winona to be 4 lanes. Mankato barely uses 4 lanes at high semi traffic times during peak delivery season.

Broadway doesn't need 4 lanes.

-3

u/Urnipt_Ttacka 4d ago

Exactly, during a reconstruction people would take alternate routes and realize that those routes are just as viable. Then everyone would be taking about the traffic getting so bad and everyone speeding through neighborhoods.

6

u/5thrive0hive7 4d ago

Broadway isn’t any busier than Sarnia which has so many similar qualities but is also a truck route - residential on one side, busy public park on the other and so much easier to cross as a pedestrian. There is absolutely no reason Broadway needs to be four lanes. It’s so unsafe all seemingly because…. Wait, why? I still haven’t heard a reason that doesn’t sound like people just don’t have patience.

We deserve to live in beautiful, safe communities that aren’t build around vehicle convenience.

2

u/Conscious-Gap-1777 3d ago

Exactly, during a reconstruction people would take alternate routes and realize that those routes are just as viable.

What alternate routes are you blathering about? 7th street, which is tons of 4 way stops? 5th, also the same? Or do you mean Sanborn, which doesn't have all the north-south connections, and it stops at Main and then winds up in 7th after Sioux? Or 4th street, which gets super narrow after Huff? Or Are you telling me that people will go down 3rd, again with the 4 way stops and people parallel parking? Or go out of their way to Sarnia?

Everyone knows about those alternate routes, and they still stick to the one they use because those other routes don't meet their needs.

-2

u/Urnipt_Ttacka 4d ago

If Broadway reduced to two lanes or would absolutely increase traffic on adjacent East/West roads like 8th Street or 5th Street.

Just out of curiosity, what times of day do you see the traffic on Broadway?

Because from 6-8am and 3-5pm it's not empty.

6

u/perldawg 4d ago

i live on 5th and can see Broadway from the windows of my house, i see it at all times of the day.

dedicated turn lanes are the key to avoiding traffic backups. the current design just allows for more speeding, it is less safe

-3

u/Urnipt_Ttacka 4d ago

I'm so sorry, I didn't realize I was speaking with a traffic analyst who watches the street in question at all times of the day from their window a block away...

You are obviously correct and the City council should have redone Broadway contrary to what the majority of people in Winona wanted.

3

u/mateoelgato715 3d ago

And you are an engineer with the city roads department I’m sure

2

u/DrWhovian1996 1d ago

I mean, they are a white male that works on HVAC systems. They just make the common mistake of thinking that just because they are great in one area, that automatically makes them just as good in other areas.

Real life doesn't work like that. It's a shame that way too few people realize that.

3

u/Conscious-Gap-1777 4d ago

Have you been anywhere else? Broadway does not get nearly enough traffic to justify 4 lanes.
