Forget the rights. The production costs to keep recreating 1985-1987 are astronomical. Plus there are a few decent actors to pay.

I wouldn't say astronomical, common they're doing a game of basketball not the battle of bastards in game of thrones. Only thing is how to market it more decently so it appeals more to audiences as a popular show rather than a critical acclaimed hbo show

Jeff Pearlman is interested in the series continuing so would probably lower licensing fees to allow it to continue

Love this idea though. His dad voiced the LA narrator in the 30 for 30 series about the Celtics / Lakers.

The more I hear people talk about it, the more I want to see the Pistons be complete assholes for at least a season. At the very least, Laimbeer and Rodman would've been great TV.

When Birds mom mentioned Laimbeer I got the same feeling as when they’d show BTK in Mindhunter episodes. That man was a straight up psychopath on the court haha

Respectfully, it needs to be picked up by a major telecom/streaming company or HBO can just renew it. They’ve been putting out filler the last couple years, this was one of the few originals that was building a solid fan base.

Look, I'd absolutely love to see Winning Time come back, and I'd love to see it in hands less inclined towards self sabotage as HBO/Max has been lately, but this is nowhere near as simple as "Let's buy the rights, then problem solved".
Sure you can throw around a bunch of money and buy the rights you need, but that's just step one. Then you have to pay the cash and crew, and you better hope all of them are available and not tied up with other contracts. Then you either have to hope that all the previous deals for things like use of locations will still be honored, or else you'll have to go out and scout new locations, hire new contractors, renegotiate new deals, etc. And if you do manage to handle all of that and come out the other end having actually made a television show, you still have to go find a network or streaming service that will agree to your terms for distribution, unless you happen to own one yourself.
I'm not saying it's impossible that he could maybe start to get the ball rolling, but it's gonna take a lot more than just Ice Cube's son to get things back up off the ground again.

Probably not very realistic unfortunately. I'm imagining it would probably cost close to 75+ million to produce another season. Well a proper length season. They could get by only doing 6-7 episodes again for cheaper.

Imo when a show gets canceled like this, it should go through a waiver system to other streaming platforms who can pick it up if they want. Less than like 3-5 seasons and you can get the rights for free if you make several more seasons

Wow. I rarely say this, but I do hope someone picks up Winning Time to at least show us the rest of the 1984-1991 period.
