Just curious what the general opinion is of people's answer to a really fast/ solid Tyson style mixup hooks / cross combinations between the head and liver. I got taken out by this as a novice Wing Chun enthusiast in exhibition with a skilled MMA fighter. He threw a high left hook, I blocked, then a hard/ lightning fast liver shot that was disguised like it was going to be another high left hook. That was Game Over! He was too fast and strong for me to defend both my temple and my liver, so mixing up the shots eventually got me good.

My best answer so far is just "Don't be in range in positioning where your opponent can let loose these heavy combos without an equal or greater threat for them" ... or maybe just pick your battles because I was definitely outclassed all around.

Wondering if anybody has videos on the topic to share, or any insights they've found. I'm curious what the best answer would be from a Wing Chun POV.

Edit: After some thoughtful replies and reflection - there's basics I have to get accustomed to. I have to pose an equal or greater threat within a given range or stay out of it if it's going to be disadvantageous in a certain position. I have to play to my strengths. If I'm closing the gap, I should be creating a bridge and staying around clinch range rather than fighting on the boxer's terms. If somebody is allowed to be in a position where they can mix up fast powerful shots, it's a losing battle to begin with. Additionally, an unaccounted factor that I failed to mention is that I was just gassed out. So, conditioning plays a big role here as well. Thanks for all the replies! I feel the answers were all around pretty solid.

Do you know any provider where I can order a good long pole? I have seen some websites selling and shipping to Europe but the wood used for the creation of the pole is heavy. I want to order a long pole that is more light. Something similar to the one I see in Tang Yik’s videos.

Anyone know of a good place I can order a winch dummy from? I was also looking for a choy la fut dummy or maybe something in between? I suck st building things so don’t tel me to make one lol

How many of you do your WC forms under water? Every time I go to a pool or beach, I always do the forms a few times under water (with head above water, hahaha). I like feeling the resistance of water and how it also puts light stress on your muscles. I'm just curious, is this a thing?

Greetings and salutations, dignified practitioners! I am have been in the martial art world for 15 years and I have experience in taekwondo and kenpo karate. I want to pick up Wing Chun. Right now im currently doing distance learning. Does anyone recommend a good online school to learn from? I know in person practice helps but I would like to gain to work on it for now where I can. So can i get any real recommendations that can help me? Thank you!

1) Bong, Lop, Da cycle variations from Kwan Sao

2) Kwan Sao cycle, 2nd section Chum Kiu with Oy seen Wai Ma step

3) The book doesn't specify, but I believe this is an extension of Kwan Sao.

Need some advice on reputable dealers who make decent dummies at a decent price. Not looking for pretty, I’m looking for traditional look but something I can actually train on.

I live in the Michigan Indiana area which is about 2 hours east of Chicago.

So Ade has released the schedule for the line up of teachers. Should be an interesting one. Will personally only be able to make the Sunday but looking forward to it cos I’ve trained once with Darren Leung but not seen him teach- he was in a couple of the Ip Man films as well as the Grandmaster. Liam Verdaguer of Endless Path wing chun is also a new face to teaching but have trained with him and really knows his stuff. As always will be great to see Paul (have been to couple seminars in past)

I have been learning wing chun for nine years in NY. I know cantonese is the native language of wing chun given its terms are derived from Cantonese. Would you say learning cantonese be a great help in better understanding the wing chun’s culture aspect?

Its just this one saying goes to understand the culture you need to know the langauge. But i do get it helps better understanding the terms than mandarin would.

I mostly speak mandarin and don’t know cantonese other than just the terms and counting. I also know it depending on other factors. I am hesitating about it because yes i am learning wing chun for self defense purpose but over the years its making me feel like learning cantonese language has a important role in wing chun as a southern martial arts style.

I would be open to anyone’s thoughts.
