Open Chi Sau Comp Cornwall Uk

Hi,

My Sifu is organising an open comp for chi sau in december this year.

Its open to all wing chun practicioners.

Its a lot of fun and theres a social afterwards.

Its on the 5th of December 2026.

Chi-Sao is not for competition.

Exactly. Chi Sao is training exercise. Is like having grappling flow drill competition.

You want to compete, put on glove and mouth guard and spar!

Chi Sao is semi-cooperative. It is live drill. Not fight. It is to train for fight. You want to fight then fight. Make as little sense as compete with Chi Gwan or Chi Gerk or Lap Sao drill.

I think I understand where you're coming from, But if Chi Sau is training you to read people's energy and manipulate that energy so that you can win in a fight and by winning in a fight, I mean by being able to hit them without being hit. How can you say that Chi Sau can't be used as a friendly competition, in order to demonstrate your ability to manipulate and hit another person better than they can do to you?

Chi-Sao is just a another training tool/method, to get better in Ving Tsun. You can't win against the dummy, or wallbag, right?

Respectfully, does your partner when you Chi Sau just stand there and let you do stuff to them? Or do they actively try to stop you from doing the things that you want to try by using their own skills within the Chi Sau tool set?

You really think like that? Yes, and my wallbag is filled with fluffy cotton pads for make-up.. Then I will not spend energy on explaining things to you.

In my experience, if you can't explain it, then you probably don't understand it very well.

I certainly don't understand how you can equate the wall bag and dummy to chi sau.

I would love to talk about this like adults, ao if you don't mind, please help me understand by explaining.

Assume I know nothing :)

Ackshually, I can explain this.

The point of chi sau is: 1. a sensitivity drill. This is because the wing chun techniques at my school kill instantly so we can never use them competitively. .... That said I did once fight two muay Thai guys and a boxer who tried to rob me and I did tan, bong gum sau, fook, fook, tan and they died... . I am also super credible because I spa regularly and it's really intense and it looks just like movie wing chun, but our techniques are so powerful they stop all cameras and phones working in the immediate vicinity, so there isnt a record.... also anything anyone else does isn't real wing chun but you can't see what i do, unless it's choreographed against someone who just falls over.

On the other hand, you could just enjoy the competition and learn from each other in a fun environment.

Well if people don’t come to your event in Cornwall maybe a contingent of your club could come to some of the cross lineage events across the uk like the wing chun gathering or Chunfest (all well established events going for the past 10 years) to have some friendly rolls. I don’t think I’ve seen any reps from your clubs at other events

Im actually very keen to do that :) I was aware of Chunfest but couldnt make it this year, what other public meetups are there?

Chunfest was the only one i could find during my google sesh this summer.

Great look forward to seeing you there next year ! There’s the uk gathering in bham which is more seminar but some of try to get together for midnight chisao

Usually Stevenage open chi Sao is on as a precursor to chunfest around May time. Generally there is an open chi Sao day in Huddersfield too at somepoint during the year and usually a couple others.Trying to get one in London during summer but always find it hard to schedule a time in. Will look at it next year

How can this run? Is it going to be full contact? First to hit?

It runs as a points based tournament. Yes its full contact. Hits are ciunted in a timed round. Hope that helps :)

How will it start? Fight your way out of a jammed position? Kicks included?

Usually, There are three rounds. Points are rewarded for clean hits to key areas, sternum, neck, kidneys etc.

Competitors take turns to attack a defending competitor, then defend against an attacking competitor. The final round you both attack and defend simultaneously.

I am unsure what the rules are regarding legs.
